Senior Fisheries Biologist
CCI Inc. (CCI) has an immediate opening for a full-time Fisheries Biologist whose primary focus will be to carry out aquatic assessments, fish rescue/salvage operations, and habitat assessments for energy development, transportation and utility construction projects. We are looking for someone with direct experience in a similar role.
Location: Alberta Locations (Cochrane, Edmonton).
Responsibilities:

- Familiarity with federal and provincial acts and regulations as they pertain to the aquatic environment;
- Provide advice to project management and project personnel regarding fish and fish habitat potential effects, assessment, permitting and reporting;
- Experience working as a Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist (QAES) or the education and experience to be classified as a QAES;
- Conduct fish population and habitat assessments in the role of a QAES;
- Conduct pre-construction aquatic habitat assessments;
- Develop technical reports including aquatic habitat assessment reports, execution plans, and environmental protection plans for watercourse crossing projects;
- Support the regulatory and permitting team where needed including but not limited to preparing Code of Practice Notifications and approval applications for AER and AEP, and preparing DFO Request for Review submissions;
- Complete field inspections to oversee implementation and monitor compliance with regulatory permits and project plans, and provide support or advice regarding adaptive management;
- Assist in the development of junior and intermediate staff through mentorship;
- Conduct environmental monitoring by providing QAES input during construction projects including infrastructure upgrades, pipeline, road and utility crossing installations;
- Collect water samples and prepare TSS/NTU relationship analysis and reports;
- Conduct water quality monitoring during instream and trenchless pipeline construction activities;
- Obtain FRL licences or equivalent and submit subsequent fisheries reporting per the conditions or requirements of the approval;
- Conduct fish salvage and release programs;
- Conduct reclamation and bank restoration projects at waterbody crossings;
- Conduct post-construction aquatic assessment and complete post-construction reporting; and,
- Liaise with clients, construction personnel and regulators.
Qualifications:
- B.Sc. or M.Sc. in biology or related field (or equivalent diploma with experience) with aquatic assessment related experience in Alberta;
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience;
- Experience in the role of QAES with detailed knowledge of aquatic environments and mitigation measures;
- Experience working within habitat for SARA listed species is considered an asset;
- Professional Biologist (P.Biol.) in good standing with ASPB;
- Knowledge of provincial and federal environmental regulatory requirements as it pertains to aquatic environments;
- Experience operating ATV, boat, and other field equipment;
- Experience loading and towing trailers, and driving 4 x 4 trucks;
- Certified Crew Supervisor Backpack Electrofishing;
- Excellent communication and organizational skills; and
- Valid Alberta Drivers License;
Other Assets (Skills and Training):
- Experience conducting or assisting with other biological surveys is an asset;
- Experience using various software, including Word, Excel and ArcGIS;
- Knowledge of ESRI-based field and office products;
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills;
- Technical writing; and
- Safety training courses required to work in Alberta.
Starting Salary $100,000.00 per year.
