We are currently seeking an experienced Journeyman Power Line Technician to join our team based out of Grande Prairie, Alberta.
This is a hands-on field position for a qualified PLT who enjoys challenging work, takes pride in their trade, and wants to be part of a professional utility construction team.

Position Summary
The Journeyman Power Line Technician performs skilled work related to the construction, maintenance, repair, installation, and restoration of electrical distribution infrastructure.
Working as part of an experienced field crew, the Journeyman PLT is responsible for safely completing assigned work in accordance with utility standards, project specifications, company procedures, and industry best practices.
This role requires strong technical ability, sound judgement, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work effectively as part of a high-performing crew.
Key Responsibilities
Powerline Construction & Maintenance
- Construct, maintain, repair, and upgrade overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.
- Install, remove, and replace wood, steel, and concrete poles, anchors, guying systems, and associated structures.
- Install and maintain conductors, insulators, switches, transformers, arrestors, cutouts, street lighting, and related electrical equipment.
- Perform conductor stringing, sagging, splicing, terminating, grounding, and bonding.
- Install and maintain underground primary and secondary electrical cable systems.
- Assist with transformer, switching equipment, vault, pedestal, and service installations.
- Perform system upgrades, equipment replacements, and emergency restoration work as required.
- Assist with transmission construction and maintenance work where applicable.
- Safely operate line tools, hot sticks, rigging equipment, and related trade equipment within qualifications and authorization.
Switching, Grounding & Electrical Safety
- Perform switching, isolation, grounding, and system-protection activities as authorized and required.
- Verify safe work zones and ensure appropriate grounding and protective measures are in place.
- Follow applicable energized-work procedures and electrical safe-work practices.
- Recognize electrical hazards and take appropriate action to protect crew members and the public.
- Support outage planning and restoration activities.
Drawings & Technical Requirements
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, utility standards, construction prints, specifications, and work packages.
- Confirm materials, equipment, and installation requirements before beginning work.
- Identify drawing conflicts, deficiencies, or unexpected field conditions and communicate them to the Foreman.
- Ensure installations meet applicable client, utility, and project requirements.
- Assist with quality inspections, testing, and documentation.
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain the highest standards of personal and crew safety.
- Participate in daily tailboard meetings, field-level hazard assessments, and job planning.
- Identify, assess, and control workplace hazards.
- Follow all company, client, utility, and regulatory safety requirements.
- Report incidents, near misses, equipment damage, and unsafe conditions promptly.
- Maintain clean, organized, and professional worksites.
- Use and maintain required PPE, tools, and safety equipment.
Teamwork & Mentorship
- Work collaboratively with Foremen, other Journeymen, Apprentices, Equipment Operators, Labourers, and Subcontractors.
- Support the safe and productive completion of daily work objectives.
- Provide guidance, instruction, and mentorship to Apprentices and less-experienced crew members.
- Share technical knowledge and promote strong trade practices.
- Communicate professionally with coworkers, supervisors, clients, inspectors, and utility representatives.
- Contribute to a positive, accountable, and respectful crew environment.
Equipment & Tools
- Safely operate utility vehicles and construction equipment within training and qualifications.
- Complete required pre-trip and equipment inspections.
- Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment in clean and serviceable condition.
- Report maintenance issues or damaged equipment promptly.
- Assist with material handling, rigging, loading, unloading, and jobsite setup.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Journeyman Power Line Technician Certificate.
- Strong knowledge of electrical distribution construction and maintenance practices.
- Demonstrated understanding of electrical safety, grounding, switching, rigging, and hazard control.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, construction prints, and utility standards.
- Strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
- Excellent teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including climbing, lifting, pulling cable, rigging, and working at heights.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with an acceptable driver’s abstract.
- Willingness to work overtime and travel when project requirements dictate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working to ATCO Electric, FortisAlberta, ENMAX, EPCOR, or similar utility standards.
- Red Seal endorsement
- Rubber Glove Certification and live-line experience.
- Transmission construction or maintenance experience.
- Underground distribution and URD experience.
- Cable splicing and termination experience.
- Switching and outage coordination experience.
- Class 1 or Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement.
- Experience operating digger derricks, bucket trucks, or other utility construction equipment.
- Ground Disturbance Level II.
- Standard First Aid/CPR.
- CSTS 2020.
