Job Description:
Bar None Ranches expanded into aquaculture in March 2020, adding a land-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) to its diverse operations. Since then, we’ve been successfully raising Barramundi from fingerling to market size. We’re currently seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our aquaculture team. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in Alberta’s growing aquaculture industry.
This is a full-time temporary position covering a maternity leave, with an anticipated start date in October and continuing through to February, 2028. There is potential for the position to transition to full-time upon the completion of the maternity leave coverage, based on business needs.
Principal Role and Responsibility:
- Perform daily husbandry tasks in RAS, nursery, and hatchery systems (e.g., cleaning tanks, removing debris, cleaning filters)
- Monitor and maintain water quality parameters such as temperature, CO₂, turbidity, etc.
- Observe and report on fish health, including signs of stress, disease, behavioral changes, and growth
- Participate in routine fish handling and grading procedures
- Clean and maintain water treatment systems (drum filters, foam fractionators, oxyflow) and general equipment (nets, brushes, graders) to ensure optimal biosecurity
Who We’re Looking For:
We are looking for someone who is detail oriented, with a strong work ethic and who can work both independently, as well as in a team. The successful candidate will report to the Aquaculture Interim Manager and must have strong verbal and written communication skills. A positive attitude, willingness to take initiative, and a solid work ethic are essential.
Training will be provided to cover all roles and responsibilities associated with this position.
Qualifications & Assets:
- Post-secondary education in environmental sciences is an asset
- Experience or genuine interest in aquaculture is preferred
- Knowledge of recirculating aquaculture systems and its components is an asset
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Reliable transportation is required (location is just north of Okotoks)
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license is preferred. The successful candidate will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract upon hire
- Self-motivated, eager to learn, and adaptable
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to work weekends as needed
