Kensington Vision & Research Centre (KVRC) is a division of the Kensington Eye Institute (KEI). Position Overview:
Kensington Vision & Research Centre (KVRC) is seeking an experienced full-time Ophthalmic Technician or Technologist to provide support to the Ophthalmologist and staff in providing high quality patient care.
Responsibilities include:
- Assists Ophthalmologists in the clinics by accurately and efficiently testing patients’ far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, color perception, applying eye drops to anesthetize or dilate the eye, obtaining intraocular pressure with Goldmann Tonometry, pachymetry, checking pupils for RAPD.
- Performs Visual Field Testing, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Photography, Ultrasound (A-scan, B-scan, UBM), Topography, Endothelial Cell Count, IOL Master.
- Performs tests for research patients by following strict research guidelines and protocols.
- Provides instructions to patients concerning their eye care in accordance with clinic policies and protocols.
- Facilitates timely and accurate medical records management and ensures each record contains appropriate documentation as per established policy of medical record content.
- Establishes and maintains good relations and professionalism when connecting with patients, their families, and the Kensington Health community both in the clinic and in the community.
- Follows established processes to obtain, manage and utilize patient information to enhance and improve individual and organizational performance in patient care.
- Promotes the philosophy and practices of patient-centred care and promotes the Patient’s Bill of Rights.
- Communicates with and supports patients and their families in their involvement and participation in decision making with respect to their vision care.
- Uses scientific knowledge in a systematic approach to identifying issues and in managing conflicts. .
- Continually investigates and suggest/provide ideas, resources and suggestions supporting the move to new and improved methods of delivering services to our patients.
- Assist with other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Possess a good eye for detail due to the complexity of the position.
- Technical minded with manual dexterity required for finer detail work.
- Ability to manage patient expectations and concerns.
- Team-oriented and collaborative, demonstrate a willingness to learn and also coach others.
- Ability to interpret ambiguous situations and put them into a structured framework.
- Ability to deal with multiple tasks, tight timelines and peak busy periods.
- Ability to communicate (written and oral skills) in a professional manner with internal and external stakeholders and deal with impacts and issues.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in an ophthalmology setting mandatory.
- Experience with ophthalmology diagnostic tools such as biometry, IOL Master, refraction, Goldmann tonometry, topography, OCT, perimetry, slit lamp examination, basic eye motility, and related exam room testing is essential.
- Experience working with electronic patient scheduling software and/or electronic medical records (EMR).
- in-depth knowledge of ophthalmic equipment, procedures and techniques needed to function smoothly and efficiently.
- Medical background helpful.
- Previous experience working in a fast-paced environment.
- Research experience helpful but not required.
Required Professional Designation/Certificate:
- Sc. or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certification; Certified Ophthalmic Technicians (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT).

● Staff who are ill, are not permitted to report for work and must isolate until cleared by Occupational Health or Toronto Public Health.
● Any positive staff or resident cases are reported to Toronto Public Health who directs on interventions that we must be implemented.
