Position Summary

The Associate Underwriter is responsible for processing quotes, new business, renewals, endorsements and cancellations of moderately complex accounts. This position will be part of an underwriting team that values collaboration, works hard to develop long-lasting relationships and strives to exceed expectations and deliver excellent results. The successful candidate will have a high attention to detail, excellent communication skills and will be motivated to deliver an exceptional customer experience to external and internal stakeholders.

What you will be doing:
Responsible for the evaluation, selection, negotiation, and pricing for assigned policies
Execute individual pricing and risk selection decisions within the assigned underwriting authority and in accordance to corporate guidelines for correct pricing techniques
Apply rate, exposure, retention, and rate adequacy guidelines to ensure profitability
Understand and adhere to service standards in accordance with company guidelines
Develop and maintain a professional relationship with Commercial Insurance Specialists (CIS) and/or clients to enhance understanding of the target market and to contribute to quality service, problem solving, and risk selection
Collaborate with CIS’s and clients to assist in business retention and customer satisfaction through regular interactions
Participate in the communication of the corporate underwriting philosophy, policies, and procedures as required and assist in the informal training and development of CIS
Investigate client’s risk factors relative to corporate pricing approach to gain support, agreement and enhance relationships
Build knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes including competitive analysis and information
Work collaboratively on special projects and assignments when required
Other duties as assigned

What we are looking for:
Post-secondary school education and/or previous underwriting experience
CIP designation or active pursuit of CIP designation would be considered an asset
Knowledge of underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, risk information sources, underwriting/technical manual information and statuary constraints
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office

Able to explain the underwriting and pricing logic regarding sensitive issues
Ability to foster and build long-term working relationships with CIS’s, clients and business areas inside and outside the work unit
Demonstrated proficiency and resourcefulness in identifying and analyzing relevant data and defining critical issues and alternatives
