BC Cancer’s Trev and Joyce Deeley Research Centre (Victoria, BC) is a world class cancer research facility specializing in cancer immunotherapy. We are seeking a Research Associate to support the Principal Investigator’s research in developing novel immune-based treatments against cancer. The Research Associate role is a temporary, non-contract, full-time position intended for individuals who hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field but do not develop and lead independent research programs as Principal Investigator. This is a two-year term position with the possibility of extension based on grant funding and performance. The Research Associate role is intended to be a transitional position with a maximum term (or total consecutive terms) of five years.
Working under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate will propose experimental hypotheses, design and conduct experiments, and prepare written and verbal reports of the results, including peer-reviewed publications.
What you’ll do
Propose experimental hypotheses; design and conduct experimental protocol in consultation with the Principal Investigator.
Apply standard and novel scientific techniques.
Notify Principal Investigator of issues related to laboratory protocols and experimental designs and recommends solutions.
Prepare Research Ethics Board and Animal Care applications and amendments as required, and ensure compliance with corresponding guidelines.
Develop new laboratory methods and modifies existing procedures to facilitate research projects.
Collect, record, analyze, validate, interpres and organize research data and communicate scientific findings to the Principal Investigator.
Recommend research direction based on findings in consultation with the Principal Investigator.
Identify funding opportunities and assist with the writing of research proposals and preparing budgets for grant applications.
Conduct regular literature reviews relating to research areas. Contribute intellectual and scientific input to manuscripts for publications. Present research findings at national and/or international conferences.
Participate in journal clubs, research-in-progress meetings, seminars and lab retreats.
Facilitate constructive and collaborative relationships with both the Principal Investigator and internal and external research partners.
Provide supervision of assigned work duties to volunteers, graduate and undergraduate students, co-op students, and research assistants.
Demonstrate work methods or procedures to less experienced team members as needed.
Other duties as required.
What you bring
The successful candidate will have:
A level of experience, training and education equivalent to a Ph.D. in a field relevant to cancer immunology plus a least three years of recent, relevant post-doctoral research experience.
Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex information in understandable terms to all levels of staff and stakeholders.
A record of responsible decision making, the ability to prioritize work, and independently plan and conduct experiments.
The ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities in a dynamic work environment while strictly following established protocols.
Expertise in design, validation, and performance of immunological assays including flow-cytometry, cell culture, western blot, and associated statistical and bioinformatic approaches.
Experience with budget development, grant writing and staff management.
