Coast Capital is at an exciting time in its evolution. Having become one of the first Federal Credit Unions, the Vice-President, Public Affairs and Communications has oversight of comprehensive public affairs and effective communication strategies to protect and enhance the Coast Capital brand and reputation. This role plays a strategic and operational role in leading and managing a team responsible for executing a full range of public affairs & communication functions.
Based in our Help Headquarters in Surrey and reporting into the General Counsel and Chief Corporate Development Officer key responsibilities for this role include engaging public stakeholders, positioning the Board of Directors and managing their communication needs; effectively directing internal and external communications, issues management and media relations as well as protecting and enhancing Coast Capital's reputation.
Further specific areas of responsibility include:
Providing leadership and direction to effectively implement public affairs and communications programs to enhance and protect Coast Capital’s brand and reputation
Providing strategic public affairs and effective communications advice to Board, EXCO, and SLT, determining and aligning operational activities, products & services, and policies & programs with corporate objectives
Acting as Coast Capital's chief advocate for public affairs and reputation advancement
Leading crisis management, including the development and implementation of appropriate communication strategies to proactively respond to potential issues
Managing relationships with third-parties, e.g. Public Relations/ Government Relations firms, provincial and federal regulators, media, etc.
Leading the public affairs & communications teams, providing direction to direct/indirect reports and create positive working relationships to develop an effective Help environment
Mentoring, guiding and coaching leaders in order to expand their capabilities and build management depth in the organization. Ensuring that right leaders with the right skills are able to articulate and execute divisional strategies
Is the Divisional lead on specific stakeholder issues, e.g. mergers; credit union policy and issues, and serve as the strategist for sensitive and complex public affairs projects
Leads award submission strategies ensuring Coast Capital is represented in a variety of categories
Advise the Board, EXCO, and SLT on strategic public affairs issues, priorities, methods, resources to enhance our responsiveness and effectiveness
Analyze and approve a wide variety of communication vehicles pertaining to stakeholder issues, including complex, confidential, and sensitive materials
Formulate goals and measurements specific to stakeholder campaigns
Support the President & CEO, EXCO, and the Board in external stakeholder relations activities including, but not limited to public meetings, appearances, and community relations
The successful candidate will have significant experience in a leadership capacity for corporate communications and stakeholder relations functions as well as a proven track record of working through mergers and acquisitions. Ideally, this person comes from the Financial Services sector.
Additionally, this person will have the following key assets:
6+ years of experience leading Corporate Communications and Stakeholder Relations functions
Bachelor's Degree or a diploma requiring 3 - 4 years of full-time study - MBA an asset
The ability to develop and manage CEO & Board positioning as well as reputation management
Proven experience with mergers and acquisitions
Experience developing and implementing complex communications strategies
Knowledge of awards submission strategies
Advanced project management, organizational and analytical skills
Expert communication skills, including writing, editing, and presentation skills. Demonstrated skills in convening and facilitation
Demonstrates critical, innovative, and creative thinking
Offers strong problem-solving ability, along with excellent decision-making skills
Sound knowledge of government relations and committees, including experience working with governments in BC
Demonstrated leadership, public affairs, public policy and/or advocacy experience.
Proven track record in development and oversight of comprehensive internal & external communications strategies, strategic communications, and message positioning
