Engineering Manager Canada

The Engineering Manager, Canada (EMC) will operate in a World Class Manufacturing (WCM) environment and provide exceptional people, strategic and tactical leadership with accountability for the development and deployment of the long range capital investment plan for all Gypsum manufacturing (plasterboard & finishing) and mining sites within the region.

The Engineering Manager will form part of the Senior Operations team and will work with local plant management teams and a team of central project managers and engineers on the delivery of both new and ongoing projects from multiple smaller contracts to oversight of larger turnkey installations, ranging in value from $0.3 to $30M+. This position will report to the Vice President, Manufacturing, Canada.


Build a strong safety culture within the Canadian engineering team, continuously striving for a zero accident workplace through robust engineering design and positive partnership with external engineering, fabrication, installation and commissioning teams.
Provide leadership for the engineering team through coaching & mentoring of both project management and technical skills.
Develop a high performance team through the proactive assessment of competencies and the provision of individual training and development as required.
Create an environment within the engineering team that drives accountability and encourages increased use of initiative.
Engage with the plant management teams at each site to determine the long range engineering plan to ensure continuity of supply and alignment with evolving market conditions.
Creation of the annual investment plan for the region ensuring robust motivation is provided based on risk and return to support the request for funding.
Management of the annual investment plan for the region, through formal program and project reviews to ensure that both small and large projects are adequately resourced and delivered on time as per plan.
Individual management and execution of key projects as required dependent on resource planning and prioritization.
Change management as required depending on the evolution of the annual investment plan and the delivery of individual projects.
Creation of a detailed specification of needs for key investments to enable robust & competitive tender processes to be followed with the support of the procurement team.
Commercial management of key projects to ensure investment spend is controlled within budget constraints and installed quality is in line with specification.
Work with the Global and North American engineering teams to identify industry best practices and other opportunities to improve the productivity of our existing facilities.
Champion the use of WCM in the engineering community by applying the Early Equipment Management (EEM) methodology for all on new designs and installations.
Other engineering and project management accountabilities as required.


Insures adherence to documentation systems, Intellectual Property development and protection.
Other duties, responsibilities and accountabilities as Canadian business planning dictates.


Assures Canadian capital projects are researched and implemented cost effectively. Prepares capital cost estimates, capex budget requests, project spending variance reports, purchase orders, as well as invoice approvals. Develops reliable cost effective project resources and methods, employing competitive bidding, low cost country sourcing where advantageous.


Engineering team, external vendors and contractors as required.


Position is based in in Mississauga, Ontario. Position requires significant travel (30-70%) primarily in Canada with some U.S. travel, occasionally overseas if required. Considerable time spent in heavy manufacturing environments and construction job sites, requiring use of personal protection equipment. Normal plant operation is 24 hours, 7 days a week and work hours may vary depending on business needs.


Must be able to safely climb stairs to various levels within manufacturing plants and construction job sites, with significant amount of time on plant floor. Job includes tasks that require walking, stair and ladder climbing, navigating rough terrain. Wearing personal protective equipment mandatory to comply with government and company safety standards.

Experience in the management of an extensive capital program consisting of multiple projects of varying complexity and value.
Ten (10) or more years of related capital project management experience in industrial, manufacturing, engineering or related industrial/manufacturing contracting experience.
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical or Electrical Engineering with a successful record of accomplishment safely leading the completion of several major industrial capital project installations, Master degree level an asset.
Strong analytical skills within a continuous improvement environment.
Demonstrated ability to assess project discrepancies, formulate reasoned alternatives and positively communicate decisions and directives.
Project Management training and certifications (PMP) desired.
Preference towards having the Professional Engineer designation, P.Eng.
Demonstrated Gypsum technical knowledge.
