Kelson Group is seeking a Controller to join its leadership team in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Reporting directly to senior leadership, the Controller will oversee the day-to-day accounting operations of a large and active real estate platform. They will be responsible for aiding in the achievement of Kelson Group’s strategic plan by managing and directing the finance and accounting operations. The Controller oversees and coordinates the work of the financial services team, ensuring accurate, accountable and timely accounting and reporting. As a member of the Management team, the Controller supports the annual budgeting and reporting functions as well as provides guidance and information to support investment opportunities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans, organizes, directs and controls the accounting and finance functions and department.
- Develops, implements and monitors financial policies, systems and procedures in alignment with accounting principles, financial reporting standards and organizational practices.
- Leads and manages the accounting and finance team, including hiring, performance management, directing, training, mentoring and coaching employees.
- Prepares and co-ordinates the preparation of financial statements, summaries and other financial management reports and ensures the accuracy of reports and financial results.
- Oversees preparation for year-end audit and responds to auditor inquiries into financial records.
- Oversees the preparation of government filings and ensures compliance with all local, provincial and federal tax filings and reporting requirements.
- Responsible for the setup and maintenance of all accounting records and ensuring an adequate system of controls.
- Assists with the preparation of the company’s annual report and ensures that all relevant financial reports are prepared and included.
- Prepares quarterly reconciliations and financial reports.
- Researches variances, analyzes data and presents explanations to the executive team.
- Oversees the Payroll/HR Manager who leads all payroll functions, including the administration of the employee benefits plan and the safe and confidential management of financial and employee records and retention schedules.
- Creates and maintains the chart of accounts.
- Researches technical accounting issues for compliance and recommends and/orimplements changes to systems and processes when required.
- Sets up and records all new capital purchases and mortgages.
- Oversees the administration of Occupational Health and Safety claims.
- Responds to inquiries from managers and Executives as required.
- As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, participates in the preparation of theannual budget and provides input on Strategic and Operational Plans.
Relationships
The Controller is required to work collaboratively with all employees and managers, however the internal relationships that are the most critical to their success include those with the President, Vice-President, Property Managers, Building Managers, IT Manager, and all employees in the accounting department. Externally, the Controller engages with Financial Institutions, Auditors, Mortgage Companies, Insurance Brokers, CRA and Occupational Health and Safety Authorities.

Requirements
- University degree in accounting, finance, economics or business administration.
- Completion of CPA or other relevant accounting designation.
- Minimum five (5) years of financial or accounting management experience with prior experience in the property management industry preferred.
- Previous experience managing and supervising other professional team members.
- Knowledge of the Residential Tenancy Acts in BC and Alberta would be an asset.
- Highly effective planning, prioritization and time management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent computer skills including prior experience with Yardi accounting software.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel including reports.

Pay: $120,000.00-$150,000.00 per year
