The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Central East Correctional Centre, seeks experienced corrections professionals to join its management team.

As a Sergeant, you will play an integral role in the operation of a maximum security correctional institution and contribute to public safety and security through the care, custody, control and rehabilitation of offenders.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:
  • Oversee the administration and operations of an institution that functions on a 24-hours a day, 7- days a week environment
  • Ensure effective and efficient delivery of the institution's security and correctional programs and services
  • Provide leadership and guidance to staff, and manage all shift activities
  • Perform a variety of operational management functions in areas such as security, occupational health and safety, compliance, staff services, scheduling, crisis intervention and training
  • Ensure the integrity of institutional security, the legal care, custody, control and classification of offenders, investigation of misconduct, and safety of offenders, staff and the public
  • Support and communicate a values-based and inclusive organizational model
How do I qualify?
Leadership and Management Skills
  • You have proven leadership experience in order to provide direction, coaching and mentoring to staff
  • You have knowledge of human resources and labour relations practices to address employee issues
  • You have the ability to support performance and development and to promote an inclusive and engaged team
  • You demonstrate experience in goal setting and supporting the team to achieve the goal
Corrections Knowledge and Experience
  • You have knowledge of correctional theory and practices related to the admission and discharge procedures, as well, the care, custody, control and transportation of offenders
  • You can oversee the daily operations of an institution, and ensure compliance with ministry standard, policies and security requirements
  • You have knowledge of offender behaviour and population moods in order to direct staff and determine appropriate interventions
Crisis Management, Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
You have knowledge of and understand the crisis management model
  • You can understand and apply policy, procedures and legislation (i.e. Use of Force Policy, COCAP, Correctional Services Act, Human Rights Code etc.)
  • You have demonstrated ability to lead and manage emergencies and crises in challenging situations.
  • You can identify and resolve conflicts and determine best approaches
  • You are able to apply and update contingency plans
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
  • You can communicate with tact and discretion to staff to management, offenders, stakeholders and the general public
  • You can provide clear direction and guidance to staff and communicate openly and directly in difficult situations
  • You have demonstrated ability to produce accurate written documentation (i.e. reports and memos)
Coordination and Planning Skills
  • You have strong time management skills and have a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • You have the ability to lead and manage shift activities to ensure an efficient and effective operation of the institution

You will be responsible for obtaining the criminal record check at your own expense and provide it, along with your written consent, to the Transition and Security Office (TSO), Talent Acquisition Branch (TAB), HR Service Delivery Division (HRSDD) to evaluate the results. If applicable, the TSO, with your written consent, will request and obtain any additional employment screening checks that were not obtained directly by you. (Note: If a Vulnerable Sector Screening Check is required, it must also be obtained in person at your local police service).

A record under the Criminal Code and/or other federal offence record(s) does not automatically mean you will be ineligible for the position. The employment screening check(s) will only be reviewed and evaluated by the TSO for the purpose of making a security clearance decision. The details of an individual's employment screening check(s) will be considered in specific relation to the duties and responsibilities of the position being filled. Employment screening check records will be maintained by the TSO and kept strictly confidential.
