JOB SUMMARY
In support of the mission and vision of Lambton Elderly Outreach, the van driver works closely with the Transportation Supervisor and to enhance the quality of life for seniors and adults with disabilities by providing safe transportation to and from various destinations. He/she will contribute to the ongoing development of the transportation program, and will work as part of a team to ensure the needs of our clients are being met through quality Community Support Services.

STATUS

Van drivers are considered casual employees. Assignment of work will be based on the needs of the client, driver availability and may include weekend and statutory holiday coverage.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Meets, loads, and safely transports the clients according to the schedule prepared by the coordinator. Clients may be independent, with mobility aide, in a wheelchair, or require stretcher transport.
Review schedule for the day, discuss any concerns with the coordinator.
Any discrepancies with scheduling must be addressed prior to departure for client pickup.
The driver is expected to be punctual. If this standard cannot be met it must be reported to the coordinator, identifying reason for discrepancy
Assist clients by providing door to door service
Ensure client safety by following policies and procedures regarding embarking/disembarking from van/lift. Such policies have been set out to ensure client safety.
Any concerns must be reported to the coordinator immediately.
Submit gasoline invoices to coordinator on a daily basis
Complete a daily log sheet of events and submit it to the coordinator
Submit weekly timesheets to coordinator
Complete request for van maintenance to coordinator
Adhere to agency policy and procedures.
Contribute to team and service efficiency.
Work in compliance with the Ontario Health and Safety Act (R.S.O. 1990 c.0.1) and associated regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS

3+ years of driving experience

Valid Ontario “F” drivers license

Clean Ministry of Transportation Driver’s abstract for the past three years

Clear criminal reference check

Experience and confidence in driving in a variety of adverse weather/road conditions

Knowledge of travel in the area serviced by transportation program

Experience working with adults with disabilities and adults who are frail and elderly

WORKING CONDITIONS
Concentration required for safe operation of vehicle
Constant motion and noise from vehicle
Constant awareness of comfort of all riders
Maneuvering of wheelchairs from homes to van and return
Operation of lift and restraints of wheelchairs
Ensure proper restraints are used an correctly in place for all riders (i.e. restraints, seat belts)
Driving hazards from weather, road and other drivers
Time pressure from late riders and busy schedules
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
The standards against which employee performance will be measured and evaluated will be those embedded in the agencies policies, procedures, and philosophy and relevant professional standards and the standards of excellence in Lambton Elderly Outreach. Job performance will be evaluated at the end of the probationary period and annually thereafter.

ACCOUNTABILITY

This position functions under the direction of the Community Support Services Supervisor

Good judgment is required to determine the most appropriate methodology to complete assigned tasks and to ensure appropriate handling of sensitive and confidential information.
Provision of poor program or service delivery has the potential to adversely impact clients, damage the reputation of the agency in the community, and impact agency funding.
Information technology work is of a highly technical nature performed independently under general supervision.
