Summary
The Steel Metal Polisher performs polishing, grinding, and finishing operations on steel and sheet metal components to meet established quality and surface finish standards. This position operates within a unionized manufacturing environment and adheres to all applicable collective agreement provisions, safety policies, and standardized work instructions.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Polish, grind, and finish steel and sheet metal parts according to drawings, specifications, and work instructions
- Remove weld marks, burrs, and surface imperfections using hand and power tools
- Operate grinders, sanders, polishers, belt machines, and related finishing equipment
- Inspect finished parts to ensure conformity with quality and cosmetic standards
- Follow all established safety procedures, lockout/tagout rules, and PPE requirements
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work area in accordance with 5S and housekeeping standards
- Communicate quality or process concerns to supervision per established procedures
- Perform duties in accordance with job jurisdiction and classification as defined in the Collective Agreement
- Support production schedules while maintaining union work rules and safety compliance
Qualifications
- Experience or willing to learn polishing or finishing steel or stainless‑steel sheet metal in a manufacturing environment
- Familiarity with abrasive media, polishing compounds, and finishing techniques
- Ability to interpret basic drawings and surface finish requirements
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to workmanship
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including standing for extended periods and lifting up to 50 lbs
- Commitment to safe work practices
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a manufacturing environment
- Welding clean‑up or fabrication finishing experience
- Trade certification or relevant shop experience considered an asset
Working Conditions
- Manufacturing shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, and metal particles
- Mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Work hours, overtime, and shift assignments governed by the Collective Agreement
