ABOUT THE LAUREL SCHOOL
The Laurel School is a boutique private school located at York Mills and Leslie in Toronto, Ontario, serving students from Toddler through Grade 6 across two campuses.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, caring, and engaging French Teacher to join our growing school community for the 2026–2027 school year. This position is ideal for an educator who enjoys working with young children, creating engaging language-learning experiences, and becoming part of a close-knit school environment.
The successful candidate will teach French to students from Preschool through Grade 6 and will play an important role in supporting students' language development and confidence.
POSITION DETAILS – FRENCH TEACHER
Part-Time | School-Year Position
- Start Date: September 14, 2026
- End Date: June 11, 2027
- Hours: Approximately 15 hours per week
- Schedule: Monday to Friday, during school hours
- Program Planning: 1 hour per week included
- No work required during scheduled school closures, including winter break, March Break, PA Days, and other school holidays/closures.
- Opportunity for renewal for the following school year.
The schedule and hours may evolve based on student enrollment and school needs.
TEACHING SCHEDULE
The French Teacher will provide French instruction twice per week across two campuses and six classrooms, twice per week. Flexible on which days (preferred Tuesdays & Thursdays).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching & Curriculum
- Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate French lessons for students from Preschool through Grade 6 using the AIM program.
- Create a positive and encouraging classroom environment that promotes participation and confidence in speaking French as a second language.
- Develop lessons that incorporate conversation, vocabulary, songs, games, stories, activities, and age-appropriate written work.
- Adapt lessons and activities to meet the developmental and learning needs of different age groups.
- Support students in developing French listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills appropriate to their grade level.
- Prepare lesson materials, activities, and resources in advance.
- Complete approximately 1 hour of program planning per week.
- Track student progress and provide meaningful feedback to classroom teachers and administration.
- Maintain organized records of student learning and assessment.
Student Assessment & Communication
- Prepare report cards and student progress comments as required.
- Communicate student progress, strengths, and areas for development with administration, classroom teachers and parents.
- Participate in parent-teacher communication and calls when required.
- Respond professionally to questions or concerns regarding students' French learning.
- Maintain appropriate documentation related to student learning and progress.
School Events & Community
- Coordinate and/or participate in French performances, presentations, celebrations, and special events throughout the school year.
- Prepare students for performances or presentations when applicable.
- Participate in school-wide activities, assemblies, field trips, and special programming as required.
- Contribute positively to the school community and staff culture.
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 2 years experience teaching French to children, preferably in a school or educational setting.
- Strong spoken and written French skills.
- Experience working with students ranging from preschool through elementary school is considered an asset.
- Ability to create engaging, age-appropriate lessons for a wide range of developmental levels.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with a teaching team.
- Experience preparing student assessments and report cards is an asset.
- Experience coordinating school performances or presentations is an asset.
- Ability to communicate professionally with parents and families.
- Standard First Aid & CPR/AED (Level C) certification is considered an asset.
- Clear Police Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
