Overview
To manage, prepare, perform quality-control checks on, and document survey questionnaires for an international evaluation of tobacco control policies.
Responsibilities
Survey Development
In collaboration with the ITC Survey Manager, provide the following support:
- Enter information into the ITC survey database (SDI) including but not limited to: changes in survey drafts, translations, survey notes, and variable labels
- Generate English/local language side-by-side draft surveys for use in multi-language survey development teleconferences.
- Document all survey development decisions, including investigator perspectives and intentions.
- Revise surveys during the survey development stage. Generate new drafts for the survey development team.
- Collaborate with country project managers as appropriate (and investigators where appropriate) to clarify intent and suggest revisions.
- Review surveys to correct grammar, note lack of clarity, and propose reordering and rewording of questions as appropriate.
- Reformat questions and surveys: Create section headings according to ITC conventions. Operationalize and format stand-alone questions and question series according to ITC standards
- Review response options to prevent accidental out-of-range answers
- Review and suggest appropriate question filters and skip patterns to ensure each respondent encounters only personally relevant questions.
- In collaboration with the full survey development project team, review and revise surveys, including the addition of screening sequences, conversion scripts, consent script, demographic questioning, routing, and question revisions
Survey Quality Control
In collaboration with the ITC Survey Manager, provide the following support:
- Rigorously check surveys before they are sent for printing or programming.
- Review survey drafts, including comparing questions with those used in past ITC surveys and providing related past question content to investigators and country project managers to ensure maximum consistency over countries and over waves
- For face-to-face surveys, generate comparisons among the various user-group surveys, to ensure that each question is identical across user-groups
- Perform quality control checks on surveys concerning routing, formatting of individual and series questions, question order and numbering, and consistency
Survey Preparation for Printing or Programming
- Import local-language translations into SDI
- Apply table format and country-specific styles, including non-response formatting
Support for Testing of Programmed Surveys
- Provide support for testing programmed surveys, including testing surveys as survey participants (praccing) and multiple device testing.
- Enter agreed-upon survey changes resulting from praccing issues reports into SDI.
- Generate praccing issues reports as required.
Survey Documentation
- Maintain documentation of all stages of survey development in the survey processing module in SDI.
- Enter dates and information sources of completed survey stages into the survey processing module.
- Categorize question labels (e.g., content labels) within ITC topic/content structure.
- Maintain storage of fieldwork surveys in all languages, including documentation about each wave for each country.
- Record all survey decisions, revisions, and errors found at any stage.
- For non-English surveys, compare the local language version with the English version to identify formatting inconsistencies; coordinate translation-checking when required; and document translation discrepancies, errors, and decisions.
Communication of Survey Information
- Generate survey drafts, singly and as comparisons, for investigators and project managers
- Support the generation SPSS and SAS syntax as needed
- Generate ‘Harmony’ reports – i.e., specialized comparisons of a specific question’s wordings across all past ITC surveys
- Use SDI and other resources to answer queries concerning past and present surveys
- Generate surveys for all countries and all waves in ITC website format for posting on the ITC website
- Generate variable lists and codebooks for investigators and data analysts as requested
- Provide updated survey drafts to accompany data releases
- In collaboration with the ITC Survey Manager and the ITC Survey Programmer, provide updates as needed regarding new features in SDI and the products it can produce
Support for the Development and Maintenance of the ITC Survey Database (SDI)
- Propose new functions for SDI to improve efficiency of the Survey Management Group
- Test new and reworked programming
Meeting Participation
- Attend weekly DMC meetings to gather survey development information and enter it into the survey processing module
- Attend weekly SMG team meetings
- Attend survey development meetings and/or teleconferences as appropriate. Provide feedback where appropriate on survey content and question wordings
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a field with research or survey development experience
- Two or more years’ experience or equivalent, demonstrating competence in a detailed, task-oriented position
- Experience with research in general and/or survey research in particular is a valuable asset.
- Experience with database software and/or other data-related software (e.g. Access, SPSS, SAS) is an asset
- Demonstrated excellence in written communication is essential
- Reliability, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, strong communication skills
- Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment
- Strong computer skills are essential, particularly with Microsoft Office
- Excellent skills in succinct but thorough documentation
- Ability to multi-task and to switch priorities quickly when necessary
