Job Overview
We're looking for a patient, attentive online math tutor for our 15-year-old daughter. She previously did Kumon but found the self-directed, worksheet-only format disengaging — she wants an actual teacher who explains things and notices when she's struggling, not just a screen to work through alone.
What we're looking for:
- Teaching approach: Concept first, then practice, then review before moving to the next topic. Not just answer-checking — actual explanation of why, especially when something is unclear.
- Attentive to real understanding: Able to tell the difference between a student who understands the material versus one who has memorized answer patterns without real comprehension. Please probe understanding, not just correctness.
- Paced to the student: Comfortable adjusting difficulty in both directions — recognizing when material is too easy (move faster) or too hard (slow down, reteach) rather than sticking to a fixed script.
- Response to mistakes: If she makes errors, please assign extra practice on that specific topic before advancing, rather than moving forward regardless.
- Daily practice: Short daily exercises (15–20 minutes/day) between sessions to reinforce concepts, not just weekly homework dumps.
- Curriculum scope: Comfortable teaching a full sequential math curriculum (similar in scope to Kumon's math program) from her current level through to grade 12 and beyond, so we can stick with one tutor long-term rather than switching programs at each stage.
Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, concept-based math lessons tailored to the student’s current curriculum and learning style
- Conduct daily practice sessions to reinforce key mathematical concepts and problem-solving strategies
- Assess the student’s understanding regularly and adjust teaching methods accordingly
- Utilize effective teaching techniques suited for online instruction, including interactive tools and digital resources
- Maintain clear communication with the student regarding progress, challenges, and goals
- Foster a positive learning environment that encourages curiosity, confidence, and independence in mathematics
- Incorporate relevant computer skills to facilitate interactive lessons and track student progress
Qualifications
- Proven experience working with children or students in an educational setting
- Strong background in math, with knowledge of various mathematical concepts suitable for high school level
- Experience in tutoring or teaching, especially in concept-based approaches
- Familiarity with online teaching platforms and digital educational tools
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas clearly and patiently
- Background or coursework in classroom experience, special education, or computer science is a plus
- Ability to develop customized lesson plans that meet individual learning needs
- Passion for education and helping students succeed academically
