Position Overview
The Geriatric Psychiatry Nurse acts as an expert clinician, educator, consultant and clinical care provider in the field of psychogeriatrics.
Gerontopsychiatry provides mental health consultation services to individuals 65 years of age and older with a geriatric profile and to their families and caregivers/primary care providers.
Most services are provided in the client's home environment (i.e., outreach services). The territory covered by the nurse may vary according to service needs, referral requests, number of long-term care beds per zone, psychiatric coverage, etc.
Target territory: #2 (Plantagenet, Alfred, L'Orignal)

What we are looking for
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
- Certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario (or eligible).
- Current C.P.R. certification
- Certification in psychiatric/mental health nursing (RNAO)
- Trained in GPA (Gentle Persuavive Approach) and being a trainer would be an asset
Experience
- Clinical recent experience in psychogeriatric evaluation.
- Recognized training in geriatrics.
Skills / Abilities
- Good knowledge of issues related to the elderly population, frailty, care-giver fatigue, etc.
- Good knowledge of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, etc. in the elderly population.
- Good knowledge chronic conditions and cognitive issues related to illnesses such as dementia and Alzheimer’s, Parkinson's disease, etc., and the particular considerations involved in assessment and management of these conditions in a geriatric population
- Knowledge of issues related to the presence of co-morbidities and their impact on the mental health of seniors.
- Capacity of summarizing information from various sources and writing complete assessment reports.
- Capable of giving formal and informal education sessions, providing coaching and capacity enhancement for other health care professionals.
- Good capacity of working independently.
- Capable of managing time and priorities while being regularly on the road.
- Ability to work effectively as an active member of a multidisciplinary team and in a dyad with geriatric psychiatrists.
- Access to a vehicle for home visits
- Possess a working knowledge of both official languages.
- Must have a good attendance record.
- Must have positive attitude and compliant to HGH’s values
