AXIS Career Services, the employment division of the Association for New Canadians, is seeking a Career/Employment Practitioner to assist newcomers to Canada with obtaining meaningful employment in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The selected candidate will accept responsibility for the following:

  • Identify clients' needs and skill enhancement requirements, examine eligibility, explore intervention options and develop an Action Plan
  • Provide assistance to clients in the area of career development and planning as well as essential job search tools
  • Assess clients’ education and past employment experience in the context of helping clients plan for and maintain successful employment in the Canadian labour market
  • Provide clients with current information and/or licensure pathways and retraining options as well as information regarding appropriate learning resources
  • Facilitate employment readiness program for clients
  • Engage clients in participatory and self-directed learning
  • Provide distance employment/career counselling through the utilization of technology-assisted methods
  • Provide clients with information and guidance on career planning, resume preparation, job search, interview skills, and job maintenance; pre-select candidates for interviews
  • Enhance networking opportunities for newcomers
  • Assist clients with finding and maintaining employment
  • Advise employers on human resources issues
  • Provide current information to clients regarding access to support programs and services
  • Assume responsibility for daily caseload management and ensuring all information is recorded accurately for entry into the ARMS database
  • Prepare detailed progress reports as outlined in the contract agreement
  • Link with the AXIS Career Services team to find long-term, meaningful employment for clients
  • Assume responsibility for liaising with employers on a regular basis in collaboration with the AXIS team
  • Participate in professional development activities
  • Assist with other related activities as assigned


  • Completion of University with a degree in Education, social sciences or related field
  • Minimum 2-5 years of experience in counselling techniques, career planning, job search techniques and knowledge of the changing labour market
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite and related computer applications
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills
  • Well-developed relationship building, communication and presentation skills
  • Effective time management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities
