Omachron Science Inc. (OSI) is a small research and development company whose core technical teams have developed hundreds of patented technologies across a wide range of fields, including floor care, cooking appliances, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, refrigeration, Stirling engines, solar power, new materials, and advanced manufacturing processes.
Our close-knit team of scientists, engineers, technicians, machinists, toolmakers, and model builders works in an environment of continuous learning and innovation. We encourage curiosity, creativity, practical problem-solving, and the development of new skills. Our culture is built around open collaboration and giving people the opportunity to contribute, learn, and perform at their best.
The company is expanding its engineering team and is seeking an experienced senior engineer who can make meaningful technical contributions to active projects while also mentoring and developing the next generation of technical staff.
Description
This is not a conventional facility-infrastructure design role. You will be involved in developing new products, processes, and technologies that could help advance the HVAC and refrigeration industry.
Work will span the full development cycle—from brainstorming and evaluating concepts through engineering design, hands-on prototyping, experimentation, testing, and refinement. Depending on the project, prototypes may involve machining, 3D printing, circuit-board assembly, wiring, fabrication, and integration of commercially available components.
Laboratory and experimental work may include documentation through photographs and video, as well as the use of specialized equipment such as optical, transmission, scanning electron microscopes (SEMs), and XDS equipment.
Duties
· Lead brainstorming, concept development, and technical evaluation.
· Design and experimentally develop HVAC and refrigeration system prototypes for appliance, residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial applications.
· Integrate existing components into prototype systems and develop new cooling systems, including compressors and other components, to expand the operational possibilities for heating, cooling, and refrigeration, with an initial focus on systems from approximately 500 to 60,000 BTU/hr.
· Perform heating and cooling load, heat-transfer, and loss calculations.
· Develop designs for modular HVAC and refrigeration systems, including system layouts, equipment selections, and specifications.
· Design plumbing, drainage, and domestic water systems as required by projects.
· Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, drawings, and other project documentation.
· Collaborate with scientists and engineers across chemistry, physics, biology, materials science, mechanical, chemical, structural, architectural, civil, electrical, electronics, and process engineering.
· Participate in and help manage multidisciplinary engineering projects.
· Develop project budgets, schedules, and work plans, and monitor project progress, resources, and costs.
· Communicate directly with partner companies, suppliers, and other project stakeholders.
· Lead, mentor, and support mechanical designers and junior engineers.
· Review engineering work for technical quality and alignment with applicable standards and project requirements.
· Contribute to the continued growth and development of the mechanical engineering team.
Qualifications and Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering education.
· 10 years of hands-on experience in the design, prototyping, and testing of HVAC and refrigeration systems.
· Strong understanding of HVAC, refrigeration, heat transfer, and mechanical systems.
· Experience with CAD software is required; experience with PTC Creo is a strong asset.
· Experience with the design or manufacture of compressors and other HVAC/refrigeration components is a major asset.
· Strong analytical, problem-solving, and information-synthesis skills.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
· Excellent organization, attention to detail, judgment, and ability to manage competing priorities.
· Ability to work effectively across multiple projects and disciplines.
· Curiosity, initiative, creativity, and a practical, hands-on approach to problem-solving.
· Hands-on experience developing and testing prototypes is a strong asset.
· Knowledge or experience in materials science, high vacuum, electronics, machining, or manufacturing is a strong asset.
· Experience with heat-transfer modelling and heat-sink design using PTC Creo Simulation is an asset.
· Training or experience in metrology is an asset.
