About Us

Innovation & Strategic Partnerships unites Western’s Technology Transfer Office, Strategic Partnerships, and Western Research Parks, driving the impact of Western’s research by fostering connections between research, industry, and communities.

As a Business Development Project Assistant, you will support the evaluation and commercialization of university-developed technologies, with a focus on life sciences innovations. You will gain experience in market research, technology assessment, intellectual property, and business development within a research-intensive university environment.

Responsibilities

Explore commercialization opportunities for university technologies and identify potential industry partners and markets.
Assist with technology evaluation, market assessment, developmental risk analysis, and competitive landscape studies.
Support the preliminary review of life sciences innovation disclosures, including novelty, application, and market potential.
Conduct scientific literature reviews, patent searches, and competitive analyses to assess technology readiness and commercial potential.
Identify potential industry partners, companies, investors, and target markets.
Research industry trends and emerging technologies in biotechnology, healthcare, medical devices, and related sectors.
Prepare technology summaries, presentations, marketing materials, and reports.
Maintain project records, market intelligence, and commercialization data.
Support the Business Development team with day-to-day activities and special projects.
Assist in fostering an innovation-focused culture across campus.

Qualifications

Preference will be given to students enrolled in Life Sciences, Health Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, or related programs.
Students in Business programs with prior science experience, or combined Science and Business programs are also encouraged to apply.
Demonstrated interest in innovation, entrepreneurship, technology commercialization, healthcare, or business development.
Research, laboratory, innovation, entrepreneurial, or consulting experience is considered an asset.
Undergraduate students are welcome to apply and must be returning to full-time studies in the fall.

Other requirements

Technical knowledge in life science-related fields, combined with an interest in business, innovation, and commercialization.
Ability to read, interpret, and summarize scientific and technical information.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Self-motivated and self-disciplined with a positive, solution-oriented attitude.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Experience using AI-powered research and productivity tools, with the ability to critically evaluate, verify, and validate generated outputs and information sources would be an asset.
Familiarity with database searching and information gathering tools.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, including data organization, analysis, and visualization capabilities.
Familiarity with data analysis and data management concepts; experience with SQL, Python, R, Power BI, Tableau, or related analytical tools is considered an asset.
Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
