Position Summary
Support the day-to-day delivery of the School's Out Summer Program under the Manager's direction. Work directly with children to facilitate activities, provide supervision, assist with meals, and help create a safe, nurturing, and culturally grounded program environment.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate daily activities: Land-based learning, cultural teachings, arts, storytelling, and physical activity
- Supervise children ages 6-12 at all times using positive, culturally respectful approaches
- Support Elders and Knowledge Keepers during cultural teachings and land-based activities
- Assist with daily distribution of nutritious snacks and meals
- Encourage youth leadership by mentoring older participants in helper roles
- Welcome and engage families at drop-off, pick-up and three planned family events
- Assist with attendance tracking and evaluation activities as directed by the Manager
Qualifications
Required:
- Experience working with Indigenous children and youth in a program, recreation, or community setting
- knowledge of and respect for Sq'ewlets / Sto':lo / Coast Salish culture and values
- Positive, patient, and team-oriented approach to working with children ages 6 - 12
- Valid First Aid / CPR certification ( or willingness to obtain before program start)
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Screening
Preferred:
- Training or coursework in Child & Youth Care, Education, Recreation, Indigenous Studies, or a related field
- Experience in a culturally grounded or land-based learning environment
- Fluency in Halq'emeylem or another Sto':lo language is an asset
- Valid Class 5 Diver's License is an asset
- Physical ability to participate in and supervise active and outdoor programming with children
