Taber and District Community Adult Learning Association (TDCALA) is seeking a Newcomers Coordinator to work up to 24 hours a week in assisting newcomers with settlement issues. This is a term position from March 4, 2019 to October 31, 2019 with a good chance of renewal.

Duties include:

  • Acting as an initial point of contact for Newcomers in the area to access local services they require to be successful in Canada
  • Provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for newcomers
  • Orientation and information about all things Canadian and specific to Alberta
  • Increase newcomers awareness of opportunities to connect with the community (including employment) with a regularly scheduled meet and greet
  • Increase newcomers motivation to engage with the community and volunteer
  • Develop and maintain project awareness of the service
  • Work with TDCALA Career and Employment Services Coaches to identify and assist newcomers with multiple barriers to employment
  • Connect newcomers to the separate and public school systems
  • Arrange transportation for newcomers to access community support
  • Update and maintain the newcomers directory publication
  • Monthly newsletter for Newcomers
  • Refer to English Language Learning classes
  • Refer to Driver’s License training

The successful individual must provide a criminal record check and will possess the following skills or abilities:

  • People skills – Ability to reach out to people of all backgrounds and to help newcomers feel welcome and comfortable
  • Advocacy Skills – Ability to support newcomers with whatever barriers they encounter
  • Outreach Skills – Expert knowledge of services provided in the Taber area including Vauxhall, Grassy Lake, Barnwell, Enchant, and Hays
  • Marketing Skills – Ability to create brand awareness and distribute materials to generate awareness of the project including a newcomers directory
  • Computer Skills – Proficient with Microsoft Office and comfortable creating and maintaining the service providers website/online forum
  • Organizational skills and the ability to multi-task

Rate of pay $20 -$25 per hour and Health, Dental, and Basic Life and Accidental Death & dismemberment benefits are available after the probationary period.
