Community Helpers Unite INC (CHU) is a community-driven organization committed to supporting at-risk Indigenous youth aged 12-18 in Winnipeg’s inner city. Through culturally informed programming and trauma-informed care, CHU provides a safe and welcoming space for youth to heal, grow, and connect with their community. We are looking for passionate and compassionate Shelter Workers who are dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of Indigenous youth. As a Shelter Worker, you will help ensure the safety and wellbeing of youth during evening and overnight hours, providing guidance, support, and crisis intervention as needed.
Position Overview:
The Shelter Worker will play a key role in supporting Indigenous youth during operational hours. This role involves providing direct care, maintaining a safe environment, and working alongside other staff members to create a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive space. Shelter Workers will foster positive relationships with youth, offer crisis intervention, and contribute to their overall wellbeing by promoting Indigenous values and cultural connections.
Key Responsibilities:
● Work directly with youth aged 12-18, providing supervision, support, and guidance during Thursday to Sunday shifts from 5:30 PM to 6:30 AM.
● Ensure the safety and security of the shelter environment by enforcing house rules, monitoring youth activities, and addressing conflicts as they arise.
● Build trusting and respectful relationships with youth, providing a safe space for them to express themselves and access resources.
● Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation in high-stress situations, ensuring a trauma-informed approach to care.
● Assist with intake and orientation processes for new residents, recording relevant information, and ensuring proper documentation is maintained.
● Work collaboratively with other staff to coordinate shift changes, debrief on important incidents, and maintain continuity of care.
● Participate in cultural programming, events, and activities that promote Indigenous teachings and traditions.
● Maintain accurate and up-to-date case notes, incident reports, and other documentation as required.
● Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, including regular checks of the shelter environment and responding appropriately to emergencies.Qualifications:
● Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Indigenous Studies, or related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience working with high-risk youth and/or individuals in Winnipeg’s inner city.
● Experience:
Minimum of 1-3 years of experience working with high-risk Indigenous youth or adults, particularly in inner-city, shelter, or similar environments. Experience with trauma-informed care and crisis intervention is required.
● Skills and Knowledge:
○ Strong understanding of Indigenous cultural practices, traditions, and teachings.
○ Knowledge of the Child and Family Services (CFS) system and its impact onIndigenous families.
○ Awareness of intergenerational trauma, systemic racism, and barriers faced byIndigenous youth.
○ Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on empathy, culturalsensitivity, and de-escalation.
Other Requirements:
○ Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check.
○ Experience working in high-stress, fast-paced environments.
