Head Ice Technician – Yellowknife Curling Club (NWT)
The Yellowknife Curling Club is seeking a Head Ice Technician for the 2026–27 curling season.
The Yellowknife Curling Club is a non-profit organization operating a 6-sheet curling facility in the Northwest Territories. Our club hosts multiple weekly leagues, youth programs, rentals, and community events throughout the season.
Position Overview
The Head Ice Technician is responsible for the installation, preparation, and maintenance of curling ice surfaces to ensure safe, consistent, and professional playing conditions throughout the season.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Manager, volunteers, and facility partners to maintain ice quality and support the club’s leagues, programs, and events.
Key Responsibilities
· Prepare and maintain curling ice, lobby and entrance for all club activities including leagues, rentals, bonspiels, and special events
· Lead seasonal ice installation including surface preparation, flooding, markings, and hack installation
· Perform routine ice maintenance including scraping, pebbling, nipping, and flooding
· Monitor facility conditions affecting ice quality and adjust preparation accordingly
· Maintain curling stones including cleaning, tightening handles as required
· Maintain and operate ice preparation equipment including scrapers and pebbling equipment
· Maintain daily ice logs and operational records
· Coordinate with volunteers or assistants supporting ice preparation
· Assist with seasonal shutdown including ice removal and equipment storage
Schedule
Work hours vary depending on league schedules, ice preparation requirements, and events. Duties may require:
· early mornings
· evenings
· weekends
· extended hours during bonspiels and tournaments
Compensation
Seasonal compensation anticipated in the range of $45,000 – $55,000. This is based on an estimated workload of 1100 – 1200 hours between Sept 01, 2026 and Apr 15, 2027.
Final compensation will be determined based on experience, training requirements, and the final structure of the role.
Qualifications
Experience as a curling ice technician is considered an asset but is not required for the right candidate
Mechanical, facilities, refrigeration, or maintenance experience is considered valuable
Ability to work independently and manage seasonal workloads
Strong communication and organizational skills
Physical ability to perform manual work related to ice preparation
Preference may be given to candidates with recognized curling ice training, including:
· Curling Canada – Assistant Ice Technician (Trained or Certified)
· Curling Canada – Head Ice Technician (Trained or Certified)
· Curling Canada – Competition Ice Technician training
· Previous Level 1 or Level 2 Curling Ice Technician certification
· Experience working under a Certified Curling Canada Ice Technician
