The successful Product Design Co-op Student will work closely with an established engineering team (mechanical / mechatronic) and cross-functional groups to achieve team goals focused on cost optimization, product development, and design enhancement. To excel in this role, you will need strong problem-solving skills, mechanical aptitude, and a passion for product improvement.

Job Duties
- Assist in brainstorming sessions and developing initial design concepts and product improvements for new and existing products, ensuring they meet performance, safety, and industry standards
- Create and update 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD software such as SolidWorks, or AutoCAD
- Analyze and select appropriate materials based on mechanical properties, cost, and manufacturing processes
- Occasionally conduct tests, hand calculations and FEA studies
- Create technical documentation, including design specifications and bills of materials
- Occasionally participate in hands-on troubleshooting during the fabrication and/or assembly of new prototyping new design concepts
Skills and Experience
- Design tasks require collaboration with coworkers; effective communication and reasoning skills are essential when working on projects that involve multiple team members
- Collaborate and work closely with cross-functional teams including designers/engineers, manufacturing, and quality control to ensure seamless integration of designs into production
- Hands-on, creative, self-motivated, passionate person willing to take on diverse and challenging technical tasks
- Must be adaptable to a changing work environment, competing demands and able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events
- Ability to create visually appealing and user-friendly products balancing aesthetics with practicality
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in studies such as Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related engineering field.
- Understanding or strong interest in machine design fundamentals, mechanics, materials science, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics.
- Understanding of structural FEA and dynamic simulation of machine components
- Previous design or project experience in any of the following an asset:
- Welded steel fabrications for manual and robotic welding
- Hydraulic cylinders and components, as well as control valve and plumbing details; implementing advanced hydraulic power and electronic control systems, sensors, and controllers
- Diesel engine installations, vehicle drive train transmissions and axle component selection
- Attachments to seamlessly integrate with heavy equipment including consideration for load distribution, stress analysis, material selection, and ease of installation

- Please note there are no remote or hybrid co-op positions available
- Mandatory cover letter, resume, and current transcript required
- The Paris location is NOT accessible by public transportation. You must provide your own transportation to and from the work site each day.
- The Brantford, Cambridge, and Kitchener locations ARE accessible by public transportation, however your own transportation is recommended for travel to machine test sites, other plants etc.
