We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Technician to join our team. This role integrates comprehensive ophthalmic testing, patient intake and workups, and clinical support, along with shared front desk and clinic flow responsibilities as required.
Position Summary
The Ophthalmic Technician plays a central role in both clinical diagnostics and day-to-day clinic operations. This includes performing full patient workups, advanced diagnostic testing, assisting physicians with clinical procedures, and supporting front desk and operational duties to ensure efficient patient flow.
The ideal candidate has strong ophthalmic technical experience, is highly organized, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where clinical and administrative responsibilities are integrated.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Intake & Workups
- Complete patient intake and medical history documentation
- Measure visual acuity
- Measure intraocular pressure (IOP) using appropriate techniques
- Perform Humphrey Visual Field testing
- Perform lensometry
- Conduct auto-refraction.
- Perform OCT imaging
- Perform Optos retinal photography
- Conduct A-scan biometry and optical biometry
- Perform corneal topography
- Load patients into lanes for physicians
Clinical Support Duties
- Assist physicians during patient assessments and clinical procedures
- Prepare intravitreal injection rooms and ensure sterile setup protocols are followed
- Support efficient patient flow through clinical lanes (“lane loading”)
- Maintain and calibrate diagnostic equipment
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of patient documentation in Oscar EMR
- Provide clear instructions to patients regarding testing and follow-up care
Clinic Operations
- Assist with stocking and preparing exam lanes and procedure rooms
- Participate in opening and closing procedures for the clinic
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and readiness of clinical spaces
- Ensure patient confidentiality and compliance with privacy regulations
Qualifications
- Prior experience working in an ophthalmic clinic required
- Strong understanding of ophthalmic testing and clinical workflows
- COA / COT / COMT certification considered a strong asset
- Experience with Oscar EMR preferred
- Experience with OCT, visual fields, biometry, and imaging equipment required
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work with patients in a respectful, calm, and patient-centered manner
- Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Professional demeanor with strong attention to detail
Preferred Skills
- Experience with cataract, retina, or general ophthalmology clinics
- Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology
- Experience supporting intravitreal injection clinics
- Ability to speak additional languages an asset
