Overview
The Shipping & Receiving Manager is responsible for leading all shipping, receiving, warehousing, and inventory movement activities within the organization. This position will establish, standardize, and continuously improve processes across both departments while developing a highly effective team capable of meeting customer, production, and operational requirements.
This role requires a senior-level leader with a proven track record of building systems, driving accountability, developing people, and creating scalable processes in a fast-paced manufacturing or distribution environment. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable working strategically and being actively involved on the warehouse floor to ensure execution and results.
Duties
Department Leadership
- Lead the daily activities of the shipping and receiving department.
- Plan labour, equipment, dock availability, and workload based on production and shipping priorities.
- Establish clear responsibilities, performance expectations, and daily priorities.
- Maintain a visible presence on the shop floor and address issues promptly.
- Develop lead hands and employees to take greater ownership of their responsibilities.
- Address attendance, performance, behaviour, and accountability issues with support from Human Resources.
- Build a culture focused on safety, urgency, accuracy, ownership, and customer service.
Shipping Execution
- Ensure every shipment is complete, accurate, properly packaged, documented, and dispatched on schedule.
- Verify quantities, part numbers, serial numbers, tags, hardware, and customer documentation before loading.
- Implement and enforce final shipment verification and sign-off requirements.
- Ensure missing items and shortages are clearly identified, documented, communicated, and assigned for resolution.
- Coordinate shipping priorities with Production, Planning, Quality, Project Management, and the Director of Operations.
- Escalate shipments at risk early enough for corrective action.
- Reduce missing parts, shipping errors, damage, customer complaints, and premium freight.
- Ensure shipping dates and changes are communicated clearly and promptly.
Receiving and Inventory Control
- Ensure incoming materials are unloaded, inspected, counted, labelled, documented, and entered into the ERP system promptly.
- Investigate and escalate quantity, quality, or documentation discrepancies.
- Maintain accurate inventory transactions and material locations.
- Ensure materials are stored safely and protected from loss, damage, and deterioration.
- Support cycle counts, inventory audits, and corrective actions.
- Improve material flow from receiving through storage, staging, production, and final shipment.
Process and Accountability
- Develop, implement, and enforce standard operating procedures for receiving, storage, picking, staging, packaging, loading, and shipping.
- Establish daily management routines to review priorities, staffing, issues, and performance.
- Conduct regular process audits and address non-compliance promptly.
- Investigate recurring problems, identify root causes, and implement permanent corrective actions.
- Maintain training records and ensure employees are qualified for their assigned responsibilities.
- Establish clear escalation processes for shortages, shipping errors, quality concerns, and loads at risk.
- Hold employees accountable for following established procedures and completing assigned corrective actions.
ERP and Shop-Floor Scanning
- Ensure all receiving, inventory, material-movement, and shipping transactions are completed accurately in the ERP system.
- Support the implementation and rollout of shop-floor scanning.
- Ensure logistics processes, material locations, and employee responsibilities are aligned with scanning requirements.
- Train employees and enforce consistent scanning throughout receiving, storage, staging, production, and shipping.
- Monitor scanning compliance and address missed, delayed, or inaccurate transactions.
- Use shop-floor scanning to improve inventory accuracy, material traceability, job visibility, and shipment verification.
- Provide practical feedback to improve the effectiveness of the scanning system.
Carrier and Freight Management
- Schedule carriers and coordinate inbound and outbound transportation.
- Ensure loads are properly planned, secured, and documented.
- Monitor carrier performance, freight costs, damage claims, and delivery issues.
- Confirm that customer-specific, customs, and transportation requirements are completed.
- Identify opportunities to consolidate freight, improve load utilization, and reduce transportation costs.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce safe loading, unloading, storage, material-handling, and yard practices.
- Ensure employees are trained and authorized to operate forklifts and other equipment.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and address unsafe conditions or behaviours immediately.
- Maintain compliance with transportation, customs, customer, and company documentation requirements.
- Participate in incident investigations and ensure corrective actions are completed.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of shipping, receiving, inventory control, freight, packaging, and material handling.
- Experience managing large, complex, or project-based shipments is preferred.
- Experience using ERP, WMS, barcode scanning, or material-traceability systems.
- Demonstrated ability to establish processes and hold employees accountable.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable working directly on the shop floor in a fast-moving environment.
- Working knowledge of transportation, customs, and shipping documentation.
- Minimum five years of experience in shipping, receiving, warehousing, logistics, or materials management.
- Minimum three years of supervisory or management experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Post-secondary education in logistics, supply chain, operations, or business is preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.

Pay: $90,000.00-$100,000.00 per year

Experience:
- supervisory or management : 3 years (preferred)
