Completed university degree in Human Resources, or a completed post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field, coupled with a completed Human Resources Management Certificate.
Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation or equivalent, and/or certificate in Disability Management preferred.
Minimum two (2) years of experience with disability claims and WSIB claims management in a unionized environment.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to interpret relevant legislation (Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Ontario Human Rights legislation, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, AODA).
Developed computer skills in Microsoft Office, Sharepoint, PeopleSoft, Parklane or other claims/attendance management systems.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including presentation and facilitation skills.
Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to deal with all members in a professional manner.
Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
Proven ability to handle a multitude of tasks and work in a fast-paced demanding environment.
Ability to prioritize time-sensitive duties.
Proven ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
The duties for this position will involve, but are not limited to:
Managing member’s medical absence (short duration, WSIB, and long-term disability) by:
Communicating with the member initially and ongoing as required throughout the member’s absence and Return to Work.
Supporting members throughout the process.
Requesting, obtaining and reviewing medical documentation provided.
Making appropriate referrals when needed and in a timely manner.
Making decisions to obtain additional information regarding illness/injury and identifying root cause of absence.
Making decisions collaboratively on whether or not the member’s absence is medically supported and sick benefits are in order.
Monitoring WSIB claims and medical absences by maintaining communication with the member, health care provider(s), WSIB, and Unit Commander either verbally, via email or by fax/letter.
Advising OIC of absences equal to one block and requesting documentation to support ongoing absences and/or return to work.
Obtaining and assessing information regarding capabilities/limitations, treatment program, and duration of disability.
Sourcing safe and suitable accommodation assignments if medically able or offering modified work when able to return to work.
Developing appropriate return to work plans for members, outlining duties to be performed, expectations, time frames, benefit entitlements while performing graduated hours, etc. for review and approval, and monitoring the transition to full regular duties.
Coordinating and facilitating Accommodation/RTW meetings with all members who require an accommodation for medical reasons/pregnancies or are returning from an extended absence, including returning from Long Term Disability.
Having knowledge of critical injuries and providing appropriate follow-up to internal and external partners.
Completing and providing appropriate follow up for all work related injuries/illnesses to, internal (Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), Health and Safety) and external (WSIB, Ministry of Labour) partners.
Updating Paid Duty Ineligibility list and other reports as, required.
When required, arranging ergonomic assessments for members, reviewing the results and forwarding the recommendations to the OIC for review and implementation.
Ensuring excellent documentation and record keeping, in Sharepoint and/or Parklane.
Providing appropriate information to members and other internal partners, such as Compensation and Benefits, regarding time banks and pro-ration of time banks related to absences, work schedules, and reduction in pay for accommodated work for Civilian Members.
Confirming with members if a personal evacuation plan is required, and liaising with other internal units to confirm compliance under the AODA. .
Monitoring absences, completing and forwarding appropriate documentation related to Long Term Disability and OMERS waivers in a timely manner.
Ensuring information related to OMERS is forwarded in a timely manner including follow up on OMERS letters and completion of OMERS forms as applicable
Calculating time banks, completing appropriate documentation and assisting in the facilitation of all Central Sick Leave Requests including managing the repayment of Central Sick Leave hours.
Conducting monthly audit of sick accrual
Drafting pay reduction letters when appropriate.
Working with other internal partners related to placing members with permanent limitations.
Processing entries in Telestaff by:
Analyzing the data to determine consecutive days off due to illness, patterns occurring that may be addressed, and engaging the Labour Relations Unit for review and action.
Advising member if time to cover sick absence is adjusted from another available bank, or time will be unpaid as a result of no other time bank available.
Notifying payroll of adjustment to be made to member’s pay.
Processing time approved under YRPA Central Sick Leave program.
Processing WSIB awards for members.
Periodic audit of time banks for member’s being managed by Health and Wellness.
