About HSBC Risk
Risk supports HSBC Canada in all aspects of risk management. It manages a varied range of risks, including: security, information security, contingency, geopolitical, operational, credit, pension, insurance, compliance, regulatory, market and reputational.
Key Objectives for Head of Specialized Lending:
A member of the head office centralized credit team who performs risk appraisal and /or recommendation of high dollars and complex personal credit, mortgages, credit card and small business lending (including commercial properties) in excess of the delegated lending authorities (DLA) of the regular retail underwriting team. Provides approvals for credit policy exceptions which fall outside of the regular underwriting team’s delegated lending authorities .
Protect Bank assets and maximize Bank profits. Approve credit submissions within assigned discretionary limits. Assist in structuring and recommending credit applications in excess of authorized limits to the Chief Risk Officer, Retail Banking & Wealth Management. Provide responsive turnaround within departmental objectives. Ensure that good credit risk quality is maintained for both new business acquisitions and the existing portfolio.

Improve the skills of the underwriting team. Contribute to the Bank’s training initiative through participation in training courses and providing training to the underwriting, branch and sales staff.
Maintain and improve credit management quality within portfolio exposure targets. Assist in the development and recommendation of consumer credit policies and procedures, providing support to the risk management group.
Assist with preparation of special reports as required.
Lead and develop an effective team through communication, performance management, development plans and reward/recognition
Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the HSBC brand
Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications:
Minimum of 15 years proven consumer and small business lending experience (including specialized lending – for example - professionals, commercial mortgages and franchises)
2 years’ experience in Commercial Lending would be an asset.
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business, commerce or related field, Institute of Canadian Bankers’ courses or equivalent experience.
Strong verbal and written communication and inter-personal skills to effectively manage the credit adjudication role.
Credit training and ongoing education in accounting and legal issues related to credit.
Strong ability to negotiate and influence.
Discretion to take independent action within delegated credit authority and bank policy
