Privacy Compliance Specialist

Position Description

The Privacy Compliance Specialist is a key player in Wawanesa’s privacy compliance regime. The Privacy Compliance Specialist provides guidance, support and direction on privacy matters to all of Wawanesa’s Canadian operating businesses.

In this role, you will lead in the review of applicable laws, regulations and best practices to support Wawanesa’s privacy program refinement, and provides ongoing operational advice and support on privacy and access to information matters to the Vice President, Enterprise Compliance, who also serves as Wawanesa’s Chief Privacy Officer. We are looking to have this role filled in either Winnipeg or Vancouver.

Key responsibilities

Monitors and considers changes to privacy laws, regulations and best practices and analyze impacts on Wawanesa’s businesses for consideration by the Vice President, Enterprise Compliance
Provides guidance, advice, support and direction to Wawanesa’s operating businesses on privacy matters to manage compliance and address possible changes
Addresses complex or other material aspects of privacy breaches and access to information requests
Investigates and reports on privacy incidents
Organizes, manages and tracks key privacy projects and initiatives
Develops and enhances productive business relationships by liaising with business and external stakeholders
Works with other members of the Enterprise Compliance team and business stakeholders to develop and refine existing information handling practices and processes
Leads the process of conducting our privacy impact assessments
Manages breach notifications and related regulatory communications


Minimum 3 years’ experience dealing with privacy matters in the private sector, including access to information requests
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct detailed analysis of information, and to select and implement best solutions in a timely manner
Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate at the right level for the audience and present information or arguments in a convincing manner
Excellent planning and organizing skills, with the ability to develop and prioritize effective plans that define activities, resources and timelines
Excellent attention to detail with the ability to influence key relationships
IAPP or similar designation an asset strongly preferred
Post-secondary education with a focus on legal or public policy matters required. Completion of a Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree an asset
Knowledge of the insurance industry experience an asset
