Position: Recreation Coordinator
Employment Type: Regular Part-time
Scheduled days of work: Thursday and Friday (8:30 AM–4:30 PM)

Position overview:
The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of day-to-day operations within the Recreation Program area and for leading the program team in attaining the program goals and objectives. The Recreation Coordinator liaises regularly with the Director of Care and Program Coordinator on all matters related to resident care and the program area. The Recreation Coordinator develops, leads, and coordinates the delivery of social, recreational, therapeutic, and volunteer programs consistent with the needs, interests and abilities of residents within the program and within the five domains: cognitive, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social.
Key Activity and Summary:
Administrative & Leadership
- Lead and oversee the Recreation Therapy Department, ensuring programs meet the diverse needs of residents.
- Lead recreation team meetings, Resident Council meetings, and participate in site committees.
- Foster a collaborative, resident-centered approach to program planning, delivery, and evaluation.
Program Development & Delivery
- Plan, implement, and evaluate social, recreational, and therapeutic programs aligned with resident care plans, interests, and abilities.
- Develop and distribute monthly activity calendars.
- Lead engaging activities (e.g., arts, music, cooking, gardening, physical and cognitive exercises).
- Adapt programs to evolving resident needs and promote meaningful participation and inclusion.
- Contribute to care conferences and interdisciplinary team discussions.
Team Supervision
- Train, supervise, mentor, and evaluate Recreation Assistants.
- Support staff in delivering both planned and spontaneous activities.
- Address performance concerns in collaboration with the leadership team.
Resident & Family Engagement
- Encourage resident participation and support a homelike, inclusive environment.
- Collaborate with families, providing education and support related to residents’ physical and cognitive needs.
- Uphold resident dignity, individuality, and cultural diversity.
Community & Volunteer Coordination
- In collaboration with the Director of Care, organize community outings, special events, and onsite visits from entertainers and groups.
- Lead and support events that foster community connection and engagement.
Documentation & Compliance
- Conduct regular resident assessments in alignment with established policies.
- Maintain accurate resident records, including participation and assessments (MDS).
- Monitor program effectiveness and maintain inventory of recreation supplies and equipment.
Health & Safety
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
- Promote safe environments for residents, staff, volunteers, and visitors, including during off-site activities.
- Report incidents, hazards, and equipment issues promptly.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation (or equivalent) with a minimum of 1 years’ recent, related experience in a seniors’ housing or long-term care environment, delivering programs within a social model framework.
Current Occupational First Aid Level 1 (or equivalent), WHMIS, Food Safe Level 1, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention/Violence Prevention certifications are required and must be maintained throughout employment.
Demonstrated leadership ability with a proactive, hands-on approach; takes initiative, motivates others, and fosters a positive, engaging team environment.
Outgoing, energetic, and passionate about enhancing the quality of life for seniors; brings creativity and enthusiasm to program development and delivery.
Skilled in conducting resident assessments and developing responsive, person-centered programs.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with clear, professional, respectful, and compassionate communication with residents, families, volunteers, staff, interdisciplinary team members, and senior leadership.
Strong planning, organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills, with strong capacity to coordinate multiple programs, activities, staff responsibilities, events, and departmental priorities effectively.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and general computer applications.
Sound judgment, initiative, accountability, and decision-making skills, with capacity to work independently, provide direction and support to recreation staff, and collaborate effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
