This competition is open to all applicants however internal candidates and applicants who were former employees of the University of Alberta in the past 18 months will be given priority consideration before external candidates. This appointment is for just under 1 year. This position is between 14 and 21 hours/week for the entire term of employment, with the exception of the winter break. The majority of work will be flexibly scheduled and self-managed.

The Sustainability Council's mission is to uplift people and planet. We are doing this by growing a vibrant community engaged in interdisciplinary teaching, learning, research and active citizenship at the University of Alberta. We host speaking events and conferences, promote curricular programs, support research, provide opportunities for student leadership, and spark interest in sustainability issues.
Dig for stories among the Sustainability Council's network of instructors and researchers and plan an editorial calendar.
Interview and write profiles of University of Alberta researchers and students engaging with sustainability in their work and studies.
Publish to Sustainability Council website and other venues, including selection or creation of a compelling visual to draw in readers.
Write and publish bi-weekly email newsletter promoting Sustainability Council events and programs, and raising awareness of University of Alberta research into sustainability.
Assist Sustainability Council staff with social media posts connected to the above work.
Post-secondary degree or college diploma in communications, public relations, journalism OR equivalent experience.
Clear, concise writer. Ability to write creatively within set formats.
Ability to translate technical concepts and academic knowledge into language suitable for a broader audience.
Ability to work independently, balancing work timelines and keeping files and equipment organized.
Openness to receiving constructive criticism from co-workers, and to collaborate on every level of a creative project.
Ability to interact professionally with professors, staff and students.
While the following are not required, they are useful assets for this position:
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud videography apps.
Basic understanding of web authoring in HTML and CSS and/or the Cascade content management system.
Bilingual proficiency in English and French.
