Our team in the Ottawa office is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer who will direct members of the engineering team to develop engineering design solutions appropriate to the context, budget and aesthetic requirements of building projects. The ideal candidate will have the ability to analyze and understand design intent in order to produce efficient and effective technical design solutions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Review information from reports and published documents; evaluate and analyze the information to understand broad requirements of project
Develop complex technical designs to ensure an exemplary solution is delivered that meets quality parameters, project timelines and budgetary requirements
Perform technical reviews and edits drawings as required and reviews engineering design requirements to offer recommendations and create drawings to support constructions projects
Direct engineering activities such as complex calculations, code research, material and building systems research, laying out components and calculation of program and building areas; refine and direct the refinement of design options and develop engineering details
Evaluate site conditions, including zoning requirements and site constraints; meet with authorities having jurisdiction to establish requirements
Design significant components of the overall building including integrating architectural, interior and structural design, and adhering to applicable codes and jurisdictional requirements
Collect, interpret and coordinate technical information to write engineering specifications for Project Manuals
Manage a library of resources, documents and master specifications to ensure information is current and can be accessed and retrieved in a timely manner
Source all materials to be drawn and specified to ensure feasibility and to meet design intent and comply with industry standards
Maintain familiarity with current industry trends, techniques and developments to ensure specifications are in compliance with regulatory requirements and all applicable codes
Perform site audits to accurately document existing and new construction conditions
Act as a single point of contact on project issues
Perform complex analyses, sampling or data collection, within discipline, for specific portions of broader projects
Oversee the preparation of technical reports, field reports, or specifications following office standards
Process permit response letters and coordinates revisions with architects and consultants, as required, to obtain necessary documentation and permits
Attend meetings to coordinate drawings and resources, determine project criteria and provide information
Perform field reviews to determine compliance with construction documents; identify any deviations and liaise with owner and contactor to resolve issues in a timely manner
Review project products, services and shop drawings to ensure adherence to project documents, relevant jurisdictional codes and corporate quality controls
Comply with accepted project management methodology; documents and manages scope, work effort, budget, cost controls, schedules, etc.
Review design requirements, drawings and schedules to ensure program and client requirements are met and all codes and jurisdictional requirements are complied with
Recommend opportunities for recovery of costs to ensure profitability of project
Lead project teams throughout all phases of project
Manage the delivery of all projects under direct supervision; ensure a high level of service and support to the client
Act as an expert resource within discipline for delivery requirements; e.g. reports, studies, projects, etc.
Share expert knowledge of current engineering design techniques, building systems, design trends and developments to improve the technical skills of the team and ensures they are implemented on project work
Support, coach and mentor other team members as required by sharing knowledge and expertise
Professional engineering registration is required
Extensive engineering experience related to complex building mechanical systems and multiple building types covering all mechanical engineering disciplines (HVAC, fire protection, building automation and control)
Proficient in engineering software such as Carrier HAP, Trane Trace, EnergyPlus, eQuest; knowledgeable of AutoCAD and Revit.
Extensive knowledge of Mechanical Engineering principles (minimum 8 years’ experience), experienced in technical writing, comprehensive knowledge of codes and standards
Possesses experience in project management and project delivery and in providing direction to other members of the Engineering team
Ability to collaborate with other professional disciplines
Proficient in Microsoft Office (i.e. Excel and Outlook)
