Dozer Operator Job Description
Job Summary
The Dozer Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe, efficient, and productive manner to support site preparation, grading, and earthmoving activities. This role requires strict adherence to safety protocols and operational guidelines while maintaining equipment and worksite awareness. The operator must work closely with supervisors and other crew members to ensure tasks are completed accurately and on schedule, contributing to the overall success of the project.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate dozers to move earth, clear land, grade surfaces, backfill, and perform material movement according to project specifications.
- Assist in site preparation including excavation and leveling operations.
- Maintain proper blade control to achieve desired contours and slopes.
- Perform routine maintenance checks, daily pre-use inspections, and report equipment issues or defects.
- Follow site plans, grade stakes, and supervisor instructions for grading and earthmoving.
- Maintain clear communication with other equipment operators, ground crew, and spotters using radios or hand signals.
- Implement safe work practices, comply with ground disturbance procedures, and follow all site-specific safety protocols and traffic control measures.
- Participate in site safety meetings, toolbox talks, emergency drills, and training sessions.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings, including personnel, equipment, and environmental conditions.
- Complete required documentation such as equipment logs, inspection checklists, and safety compliance records.
- Identify and report hazards or near-miss incidents promptly.
- Always ensure proper use of PPE.
Reporting Responsibilities
- Report to the Foreman (Site Supervisor).
- Complete daily equipment inspections and submit reports through SiteDocs.
- Communicate equipment issues, safety hazards, and other concerns.
- Review and sign off on all daily tailgate meeting minutes and weekly toolbox talks using SiteDocs
- Report any incidents, injuries, near misses, hazards or unsafe conditions immediately to Foreman (Site Supervisor)
- Complete and submit incident reports, near-miss documentation
- Self motivated, frequent periods of working alone
Qualifications
- Valid operator certification or equivalent training (if required).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Knowledge of ground disturbance safe work procedures and practices, soil types, and any other safe work procedures and practices related to the work being performed
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, site plans, and compaction specifications.
- Physical ability to perform tasks in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
Physical Demands
- Frequent sitting and operating machinery for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity to control levers and foot pedals.
- Capability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical labor as needed.
- Walking, standing, bending, and climbing on uneven terrain.
- Exposure to vibration, noise, and outdoor elements.
- Climb in and out of equipment safely and frequently.
Work Environment
- Work performed outdoors on active construction sites, including water and sewer installation and rehabilitation projects.
- Exposure to dust, noise, mud, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hats, safety boots, and high-visibility clothing.
- Typical work hours are 8–12 hour shifts with potential for overtime, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, as required by project schedules.
