Parkland School Division (PSD) is a large progressive school jurisdiction serving Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Fort Chipewyan and Parkland County. The Parkland School Division has a Permanent Occupational Therapist position available at the Centre for Education, in Stony Plain, Alberta. The FTE will be based on mutual agreement between the Division Principal and successful applicant. This posting will remain open until two qualified applicants have been hired, if interested please apply ASAP.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams consisting of Teachers, Speech Language Pathologist, an Educational Psychologist, Physical Therapist, Speech Language Assistants, Educational Assistants, and school based support teams
Administer, score, interpret and debrief standardized pediatric occupational therapy assessments.
Identify difficulties in fine motor, visual motor, perceptual and sensory integration.
Monitor children’s progress by providing ongoing observation and embedded play based programing focused on the development of self-help skills, sensory, fine motor skills, gross motor development, socialization/play skills and behavior, in collaboration with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Generalize and implement intervention strategies to all natural environments, which include programming for generalization in the classroom, home and community environments.
Support teams within Early Education sites and/or Kindergartens throughout the school division.
Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes and Experience
Related experience, preferably with school-aged children with complex communication needs
Demonstrate knowledge of current evidence-based practices in the area of occupational therapy
Have a track record of being a team player and community minded
Have excellent oral and written communication skills
Flexibility, patience, sensitivity, tolerance, enthusiasm, creativity and imagination
Good physical health
The ability to deal with the emotional and mental stress of working with students with complex needs in a school setting
Strong computer skills
Be committed to your own learning
Have excellent time management skills, flexibility, and ability to work independently and problem solve
Adhere to a high level of professional and ethical standards
Qualifications:
Registered with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapist (ACOT) is mandatory; continuing professional development as per ACOT guidelines; professional liability as per ACOT guidelines
Experience or willingness to facilitate professional learning opportunities for other team members would be considered an asset.
Ability to and experience with working as a member of a multi- disciplinary team
Experience working with early education/kindergarten students would be an asset
In this multi-disciplinary setting, it is essential to be informed in all disciplines (Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy and behavioural interventions) to meet the needs of the whole student.
Non Violent Crisis Intervention certification would be an asset.
Valid Alberta Drivers License, - Local area travel requires the use of a personal vehicle for which mileage will be reimbursed.
Physical Demands
The Occupational Therapist may be required to routinely lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Sometimes, heavier lifting may be required to help children move into and out of wheelchairs. Occupational Therapists may also use mechanical lifts for students.
Ability to work with students in a variety of positions (i.e. sit on Chair or floor, kneel, stand, bend or reach to assist.
Ability to walk easily, maneuver stairs and move from one position or place to another with sufficient ease to respond to student need in a timely manner.
Ability to assist with student transfer (i.e. floor-chair, standing, sit, standing transfers as needed per weight of student.
Working Conditions
Occupational Therapists work indoors except when supervising children outdoors or going on field trips.
The scheduled hours to be worked will be determined by each specific position.
This position may require the use of a personal vehicle as per job posting.

Occupational Therapists must agree to respect the confidentiality and personal integrity of students, parents, therapists and other staff.
This position requires an original copy of a current clean criminal record check with vulnerable sector and an original copy of a child intervention record check.
This position is covered by the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 5543
Hours of Work: based on mutual agreement (Monday to Friday)
Salary: $65.50-$70.62/hr (Pay Group 9)
