Department Description:
The Department of Family Medicine (“DFM”) has over 240 staff and 1,500 faculty distributed throughout thirteen teaching sites and surrounding communities, teaching 214 residents and over 650 other health professional learners annually, and through its affiliated faculty members serving over 1,000,000 patients within southern/south Central Ontario. It is a recognized leader in family medicine teaching, research, and practice nationally and internationally. It is one of only two academic Family Medicine departments in Canada that directly operates primary care clinics, operating two large clinical teaching units (“CTU”) as a joint venture with Hamilton Health Sciences and the McMaster Family Health Organization Association. The CTUs encompass forty physician practices serving over 45,000 patients and training over 70 family medicine residents annually, supported by more than 40 administrative staff in addition to physicians and a team of more than 20 other health professionals.

Job Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Administration, and in close collaboration with a distributed leadership team in the Department of Family Medicine, the Knowledge Translation (“KT”) and Strategic Communications (“SC”) Manager provides leadership, guidance and support for targeted, responsive and effective KT and SC initiatives across all departmental domains (Research, Education, Health Services, Faculty Relations, Staff Relations, Chair’s Office) to further strategic objectives, strengthen internal and external engagement, enable greater research impact by furthering the uptake of evidence into practice and policy, and enhance collective and individual profile and reputation aligned with purpose.
Accountabilities:
Leads the development, implementation, evaluation and continuous improvement of effective KT and SC plan(s) and related strategies that are aligned with the direction and needs identified by faculty and staff leaders at the department level and in each departmental domain and, where relevant, reflect current and emerging evidence informed knowledge translation methods based on a number of conceptual models.
Fosters an inclusive environment in which diverse thoughts (of all classes, races, nationalities, cultures, religions, disabilities, genders, and sexualities) are welcomed, shared and integrated in the development and execution of KT and SC strategies and activities.
Ensures KT consultation and implementation support is provided to relevant departmental domains, directly or delegated, through the full scope of the research process, including question development, stakeholder engagement, synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethically-sound application of knowledge in practice.
Oversees the identification and implementation of strategies to transfer research findings to policy and program decision makers.
Ensures that knowledge is transferred and exchanged in ways that meets the needs of a diverse audience by consulting with stakeholder groups and knowledge holders across various equity-deserving communities.
Maintains awareness of evolving trends and recommended practices in KT and SC, including regulatory compliance regarding accessibility.
Directly produces, or oversees production of, KT and SC materials across all media (written, visual, digital) for various channels of delivery to diverse audiences.
Ensures all department-affiliated web-site content is current, compliant with best practices and consistent with University/Department branding and messaging, and works with leadership colleagues to ensure ongoing responsiveness to needs of each relevant audience.
Oversees the preparation and production of internal newsletter(s).
Ensures the design(s) and process(es) are in place for continuously evolving faculty and staff portals, in collaboration with IT, HR and Faculty Relations colleagues, and ensures content is relevant and effective for all internal audiences in collaboration with each departmental domain.
Manages and continuously improves departmental and domain social media presence, including evolving supportive processes and building distributed capacity for development of related content.
Compiles and disseminates ad-hoc reports and products to broad audiences and stakeholders, including press releases and briefings for decision-makers.
Advises on, and implements or oversees implementation of appropriate KT and/or SC channel(s) per leadership direction for priority messaging that arises from time to time.
Directs, supervises, hires, trains, develops and performance manages two full-time UNIFOR staff and up to two students, including review and prioritization of deliverables and work assignments as needed.
Manages financial and physical resources required to implement and sustain KT and SC plan, with annual review, including development and accountability for required budget.
Liaises effectively with KT and/or SC colleagues in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University and, where relevant, external collaborating organizations.
Qualifications:
Education: A Graduate degree with background in health sciences and communications.
Experience: Strategic communicator with 3-5 years of experience.
Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge and understanding of primary care and the research process.
- Demonstrated commitment to working through an EDI (equity, diversity & inclusion), ARAO (anti-racism & anti-oppression) and decolonial lens, with strong valuing of Indigenous ways of knowing and wisdom.
- Awareness of diverse communication mediums and styles, in acknowledgment that knowledge can be produced, received, shared and understood beyond Western/Eurocentric standards.
- Demonstrated success in areas of media relations, strategic internal and external communications and in all social media platforms.
- Ability to translate complex ideas into plain language.
- Computer knowledge, with proven technical experience managing digital tools including: video capture and editing, WordPress, web analytics, Social Media analytics and Social Media tools.
- Understanding of new media and evolving media environment.
- Creative thinker and self-starter with ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated exceptional research and writing skills.
- Knowledge of electronic media and media monitoring systems.
