Job Summary

The Controller is responsible for the management of the day-to-day financial operations - technical and non-technical accounting; oversight of all financial reporting (regulatory, consolidated, management) and taxation; supervision of Canada Life Branch finance team; and managing the adoption / implementation the IFRS 17 accounting standard in Canada.

Key duties and responsibilities

Monitor, document and communicate the administrative and accounting methods and procedures as well as their internal controls.
Collaborate in the development and the execution of quality and relevant financial statements and analysis for submission to the OSFI/AMF and to the external auditors/GIA.
Collaborate with Head Office on financial reporting for IFRS and French GAAP.
Prepare tax provision and co-ordinate annual tax filings
Oversee the control and the reconciliation of the accounts of the general ledger connected to the products to ensure the integrity of the financial information.
Timely analyze and address financial variances; ensure information in accounting systems is valid.
Provide to the Department’s authority, the customers, the actuaries, the auditors and the governmental authorities the necessary support in relation with the production and the communication of their reports within the framework of the realization of their mandates.
Comply with all relevant guidelines and laws as required. Implement changes as needed to support compliance.
Collaborate with the HUB the preparation of expense budgets and analyze budget-to-actual variances. Oversee systems supporting expense management.
Manage cash activities for the branch including cash flow forecasts and analytics.
Support client auditing programs.
Maintain a robust internal control environment to mitigate errors and fraudulent activities.
Participate in analysis of portfolios.
Remain up to date with professional and technical knowledge
Provide accounting support to various stakeholders
Perform other duties as requested by the CFO

Required experience, education & competencies

5-8+ years of accounting or auditing experience; including experience developing, implementing & controlling financial reporting procedures/practices.
Experience managing staff members
Experience developing & monitoring regulatory & IFRS financial reporting.
Excellent verbal & written communication skills; proven success communicating effectively at all levels of an organization.
Strong organization & problem-solving skills; ability to manage multiple priorities/projects.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Ability and willingness to work additional hours to meet challenging deadlines even in areas beyond direct responsibility (Financial Reporting and Analysis team effort).
Role will require business travel to SCOR office locations (Canada, US and outside of North America).
Insurance and/or reinsurance life accounting experience and education, preferred.
Canadian insurance taxation experience and education would be an asset.
Familiarity with various accounting software applications/database systems, preferred.
Team player comfortable with a fast paced environment, preferred.
C.P.A. or equivalent combination of education & experience, including strong PC skills, preferred.
