About The Role
Schedule: 5x2, Monday to Friday or 4X3, flexibility in schedule available
Position Reports To: Senior Mine Engineer / Lead Engineer
Position Overview
We currently have an exciting opportunity for one Engineering student to join our Technical Services department for an 8, 12 or 16-month work term commencing September 2026, to assist the Mine Planning and Ventilation teams. This is an opportunity for a full-time engineering student who has a safety-oriented mindset to gain experience in an operating, block cave mine.
Block Caving
New Afton Mine is currently the only operating block cave mine in Canada. Block Caving is an underground mass mining method that allows the extraction of larger and lower grade deposits than traditional underground mining methods. As many of the worlds large surface mines continue to exhaust their viable open pit reserves and new surface deposits continue to decrease, block caving will provide an economical method for continuing to mine these large deposits underground.
Block Caving presents some of the most complex technical challenges in mining. See New Afton’s Animated Block Caving video for more information.
