The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Animal Welfare. This faculty member will also serve as Director of the Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre (SJDAWC, the Centre). The SJDAWC, funded through the generous support of the Sir James Dunn Foundation¸ promotes animal welfare through research, service, and education. The Centre supports research projects and service activities leading to tangible benefits for non-human animals. The Centre networks with other institutions and organizations.

The successful candidate will be a creative, energetic, and visionary faculty member who promotes animal welfare within UPEI, and more broadly in the region, Canada and internationally. The faculty member will oversee administration of the SJDAWC and have teaching (DVM and graduate), service (community and scholarly), and research (extramurally funded) responsibilities. Service responsibilities include development of good working relationships with appropriate commodity and community groups, industry and government.

The faculty member will, through leadership and collaboration:
  • Undertake independent and/or collaborative research and develop graduate programmes in veterinary medicine leading to MSc or PhD degrees specializing in animal welfare
  • Coordinate educational efforts in the area of animal welfare within AVC to deliver relevant graduate courses, undergraduate course(s) for veterinary students, and continuing education for veterinarians and other interested parties
  • The faculty member will have oversight responsibility for administration of the Centre.
The successful candidate will
  • Have demonstrated teaching, service, and research skills
  • Have prior experience in organizational oversight
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills, leadership experience, and the ability to work well with others in a collegial atmosphere.
Ideally the candidate will hold components of the following credentials:
  • a PhD degree in an animal welfare-related area and/or
  • a DVM or equivalent degree and/or
  • board certification by the American College of Animal Welfare (or European equivalent)
The successful candidate will be cross-appointed to the departments of Companion Animals and Health Management at the AVC, reporting to the Chairs of the Departments and to the Dean. The position will be tenure track with an appointment and salary at a rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. Full-time, permanent faculty receive a comprehensive fringe benefits package with benefit details provided at time of offer in accordance with the collective agreement. This appointment is subject to budgetary approval.

The AVC is located on the campus of UPEI in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (PEI). UPEI is committed to teaching, service and research. The AVC is fully accredited by the AVMA/CVMA, is recognized by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and delivers DVM, MVSc, MSc and PhD programs.
