The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family centered care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with the UAH and AHS policy and procedures. 3D4 is an 18+ bed unit providing care to Hepatobiliary and General Surgery patients received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care unit and directly from home and/or surgery clinics. Decisions are made in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment. The RN is expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives, supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the surgery program. The RN is expected to take on the responsibility of charge nurse as required. Note: Rotation subject to change.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $35.87/hour - $43.82/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable. Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)
Additional Required Qualifications:
Successful candidate is expected to pass the medication calculation exam (80% score) provided by the surgery program within 14 days of orientation. Medication Calculation exams is provided during the surgery orientation days or scheduled by the CNE. The candidate has 3 attempts to pass the exam within the 2-week orientation period. Current adult surgical nursing experience within the last 5 years is required. A minimum of 1-year General Surgery and/or Hepatobiliary experience is required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Demonstrated excellent assessment, documentation, clinical, organizational and patient care skills. Proficient at medication administration calculations. Ability to deal with stressful situations, prioritize complex patient care needs and demands, prioritize workload assignment and cope with frequent interruptions. Connect Care trained. Ability to lift 25-50 pounds, must not have current activity restrictions, such as pulling, pushing, reaching and bending.
Preferred Qualifications:
Current IV therapy, Pre-op/Post-op care protocols, Central line/PICC care, Ostomy care, basic surgical wound/drain care, complex wound care and negative pressure wounds (VAC dressing), NG tube insertion and management, TPN administration, PCA/PCEA/TAP management, Insulin infusion protocols and blood product administration. Strong patient teaching skills. Charge Nurse and Connect Care (EPIC) trained.
