Role Overview
As the U.S. Tax Associate, you will support cross-border tax engagements while collaborating closely with team members and senior professionals to deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment. You will gain exposure to a diverse range of U.S. tax matters, expanding your technical skills and client communication while managing multiple priorities, meeting key deadlines, and taking on increasing responsibility over time.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare U.S. federal and state tax returns for individuals, corporations, trusts, and estates, including returns of moderate complexity.
- Prepare and maintain supporting workpapers in accordance with firm methodology and professional standards.
- Assist with U.S. tax compliance filings, including Forms 1040, 1040-NR, 1120, 1120-F, 5471, 5472, 8621, FinCEN 114, 3520, and 3520-A.
- Support the preparation of U.S. estate and gift tax filings (Forms 706-NA and 709), where applicable.
- Conduct tax research related to U.S. federal and international tax matters, including PFICs, Subpart F, and GILTI, and summarize findings for senior team members.
- Communicate with clients to request information, clarify tax matters, and follow up on outstanding documentation.
- Assist in responding to IRS and state tax authority notices and correspondence.
- Collaborate with engagement teams, managers, and partners to meet filing deadlines and client deliverables.
- Support onboarding of new clients, including gathering required documentation and setting up compliance processes.
- Contribute to process improvements and knowledge sharing within the U.S. Tax division.
- Train and mentor junior staff.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in Accounting and/or equivalent years of professional experience.
- U.S. CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) or actively pursuing designation.
- Master of Taxation (U.S. focus) is considered an asset.
- 3-5 years of experience in U.S Tax from a public accounting firm.
- Experience using professional U.S. tax preparation software; experience with CCH Axcess.
- Demonstrated experience preparing U.S. individual tax returns (Forms 1040 and 1040-NR).
- Working knowledge of U.S. international tax reporting, including:
- PFIC rules and reporting (Form 8621)
- Subpart F and GILTI provisions
- Foreign reporting forms (5471, 5472, FinCEN 114)
- U.S. trust reporting (Forms 3520 and 3520-A).
- Exposure to U.S. corporate tax returns (Forms 1120 and 1120-F) is required.
- Familiarity with U.S. estate and gift tax filings is an asset.
- Knowledge of Canadian tax legislation is an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize work effectively in a professional services environment.
