We are currently seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Construction Estimator with a minimum of 5 years of experience to join our growing team.
Position Summary :
The Construction Estimator will be responsible for reviewing tender documents, preparing accurate quantity take-offs, obtaining supplier and subcontractor pricing, and producing competitive quotations for residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial projects. The successful candidate will also assist in business development, maintain estimating records, and provide support to the project management team throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities :
- Review architectural, structural, and specification documents to understand project scope.
- Perform accurate quantity take-offs for miscellaneous metals, including railings, stairs, fences, gates, structural steel, and custom metal fabrication.
- Prepare detailed and competitive project quotations within tender deadlines.
- Attend pre-construction meetings and perform site visits when required to verify existing conditions and better understand project requirements.
- Coordinate with suppliers, fabricators, subcontractors, and internal production staff to obtain accurate material, labour, and subcontract pricing.
- Identify project risks, exclusions, qualifications, and value engineering opportunities.
- Prepare Requests for Information (RFIs) where drawing details require clarification.
- Maintain accurate estimating files, cost databases, supplier pricing, and historical project records.
- Assist the Project Management team by providing estimating information, budgets, and project documentation as required.
- Follow up on submitted quotations and maintain communication with clients to improve bid success rates.
- Assist in generating new business opportunities by identifying potential clients, responding to inquiries, and supporting sales and marketing initiatives.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with general contractors, property managers, consultants, and suppliers.
- Manage multiple tenders simultaneously while ensuring accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- Continuously improve estimating procedures and contribute to company growth.
Qualifications :
- Diploma or Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, Building Construction, or a related construction field.
- Minimum 5 years of estimating experience in the construction industry.
- Experience in the miscellaneous metals, structural steel, metal fabrication, or construction industry is considered a strong asset.
- Ability to accurately read and interpret architectural, structural, and shop drawings.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and estimating principles.
- Excellent mathematical and analytical skills.
- Strong communication and negotiation abilities.
- Highly organized with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Experience with estimating software is considered an asset.
- Valid Ontario G Driver's Licence and access to a vehicle are preferred for site visits.
Preferred Skills :
- Experience estimating miscellaneous metals, ornamental metals, railings, stairs, structural steel, or custom fabrication.
- Knowledge of Ontario Building Code requirements related to railings, guards, stairs, and miscellaneous metals.
- Familiarity with reading specifications and contract documents.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to build long-term relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
