The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) represents First Nation, Métis, Inuit, and non-status women, girls and gender-diverse people. NWAC is an aggregate of Native women’s organizations from across Canada and was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1974.
This exciting opportunity aims to make a difference in the lives of Indigenous women, girls and gender-diverse people in Canada and around the world.
· Working closely with the Director of Communications, lead in the development of a variety of media and external communications initiatives that support NWAC in its public relations and messaging strategies.
· Develop, implement and monitor effective communications strategies and campaigns that help the organization achieve its objectives and that heighten awareness around the work NWAC undertakes as a national organization.
· Responsible for producing a variety of communications collaterals including reports, speeches, publications, op-eds and media releases for NWAC’s external communications channels including website, social media and media at large.
· Lead a small team of communications staff and work with them to create strategies, ideas and content that may include video recording, video editing, audio recording, newsletters, graphic or info graphic creations, photography, digital media assets, publications, website updates, media archiving, on site media event management, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube videos that provide information and promotes NWAC and its activities.
· Build effective relationships and networks with other units within NWAC to support and enhance the work they do
· Oversee media relations: responding to media inquiries, cultivating and growing media relationships and initiating media directed campaigns that heighten awareness of NWAC’s key issues and underline its core messaging
· Oversee quality of materials to ensure that they are consistent with the organization’s brand and messaging
· Play a key role in facilitating communication between the national office and the provincial territorial membership associations (PTMAs).

Education and Experience Requirement
· Post-secondary degree in Communications, Journalism, Media Relations, or relevant field or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Key Skills and Knowledge Requirements
· We are seeking a strategic thinker who can take their ‘big and bold ideas’ and turn them into practical and effective communications campaigns. The Communications Manager is as comfortable with proposing ideas as he or she is with rolling up their sleeves and diving into the work. A team player who can motivate others and get the job done.
· Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a senior role in Communication and demonstrated growth and success in a not-for-profit, public or private organisation.
· Proven success in the development of effective, results-oriented communications strategies and campaigns
· Some knowledge of NWAC and of the needs and aspirations of Indigenous women and sound knowledge of their values, culture and traditions;
· Demonstrated effective critical / solution / analytical thinking skills, strong organizational skills, and superior written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills;
· Ability to work independently & expeditiously, including working under tight timeframes & with competing priorities;
· Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain effective networks and relationships and work as an integral member of various teams;
· Demonstrated sound judgement, tact, initiative, flexibility and problem solving ability;
· Demonstrated superior level of computer literacy;
· Full comprehension, knowledge and experience with all computer software including Microsoft suite of tools and internet techniques;
· Flexible schedule, may have to work evenings and weekends; and
· Able and willing to travel.
Fluency in English is essential. Bilingualism is a strong asset.
