About E-Volunteering

Cuso International’s e-volunteering program welcomes new and returning volunteers to work with our international program partners and volunteers remotely. E-Volunteering offers many of the benefits gained from international volunteering, while having the extra advantage of fitting into one's regular weekly schedule without needing a passport. Contributing and giving back to a community, gaining new skills, and making new connections are common benefits of e-volunteering and for Cuso International it is a great opportunity to engage more people in its mission.

E-Volunteers are expected to supply their own basic home office equipment, Internet and have a moderate knowledge of computer technology. Some of our partners are located in remote areas with unreliable internet connection. In addition, for some of our partners, this is their first experience working with e-volunteers so flexibility and patience is a valuable e-volunteer characteristic.

E-Volunteers spend approximately 3-4 months in a placement and spend 2-10 hours per week working as an e-volunteer depending on the project requirements.

The E-Volunteer’s Role

Our Country Program Office in Ethiopia is seeking a team of ESL professionals with experience in ESL theory, to work collaboratively online surveying and evaluating current online ESL learning platforms according to their feasibility in Ethiopia.

English is a medium of instruction both in secondary and tertiary education in Ethiopia. However, research has shown that the English language proficiency level of the majority students is lower than the expected standard and as a result, directly affects their academic performance. As a result, the public universities have designed English language tutorials to address the gap. However, budget constraints and lack of proportional skilled language trainers have been the major bottlenecks to deliver the plan.

Due to low English language skills, main students, mostly female university students, get academic dismissal or if they graduated somehow, it is difficult for them to get professional work in the labor market. In return, that leads to under employment or low productivity. Nonetheless, the national economy highly needs well competent and confident young professional labor force to alleviate poverty and to be a self-reliance nation. Therefore, improving English language proficiency of university students through cost effective approach becomes one of the critical agendas for delivering quality of education in Ethiopia.

As an interesting option to this project, ESL teacher currently working in the classroom are welcome to engage their students to participate in evaluating the current sites available.

As an e-volunteer, you will:
  • Survey the available, free online English as a second language tutorial content for university students.
  • Conduct an inventory of available tools.
  • Analyze tools and recommend the best options and
  • Develop an approach to implementing these tools in an academic setting.
Essential Academic Qualifications:
  • A degree in Education, Linguistics or Communication.
Essential Professional Background:
  • At least 5 years’ experience with ESL teaching.
  • ESL and adult learning theory is preferred.
About Us

Cuso International Ethiopia

Cuso International has recently established a Country Program Office and received its legal license of registration in July 2015 from the Government of Ethiopia. In line with Cuso International VOICE project, the Country Program Office will start implementing Access to Quality Health Services (AQHS) programs through embedding Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) activities. Cuso International ‘theory of change’ for health programming emphasizes our role in improving health seeking behaviour, creating supportive and informed communities and advocating for improved health systems. To this end, the CPO has developed a health program entitled Reproductive, Maternal, New-born, and Child Health (RMNCH) project.
