Position Overview
The ASTT Power Generation Technician’s primary responsibility is to perform preventative maintenance and make repairs on generators and transfer switch equipment.
Job Responsibilities
· Perform preventive maintenance on diesel and natural gas power generators.
· Inspect, service, and replace components including engines, alternators, fuel systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, batteries, etc.
· Recommend parts replacement and upgrades to improve generator reliability and performance.
· Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and control system faults in generator sets and related equipment.
· Troubleshoot generator control panels, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and switchgear.
· Communicate findings, repair recommendations, and maintenance plans clearly to customers or supervisors.
· Coordinate with service managers, electricians, and mechanical teams for complex repairs.
· Conduct load bank testing, commissioning, and operational performance verification.
· Perform oil analysis, coolant testing, and fuel system inspections to ensure reliability and compliance.
· Complete service reports, maintenance logs, and deficiency reports accurately and on time.
· Use and maintain diagnostic tools, meters, laptop-based control software, and specialized generator service equipment.
· Respond to emergency service calls to restore generator operation during outages or failures (on rotation).
· Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, service manuals, and technical bulletins.
· Apply ASTT standards and best practices in diagnostics, documentation, and repairs.
· Provide technical guidance to apprentices or junior technicians when required.
· Manage service vehicle inventory, tools, and spare parts responsibly.
· Stay current with generator technologies, control systems, emissions standards, and ASTT professional development requirements.
· Participate in ongoing training related to OEM updates and industry best practices.
· Contribute to continuous improvement of maintenance procedures and service standards.
· Be responsible for the safe operation of a company vehicle and maintain a clean driving record.
· Engage with customers in a courteous, professional, and respectful manner/
· Be available to work out of town upon request.
Requirements
· Working proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems.
· Proven ability to perform repairs to engines, water pumps, thermostats, lift pumps, governors, and other related equipment
· Working knowledge of AC and DC power systems.
· A great leader and team player who can motivate others
· Must own a complete set of hand tools for both mechanical and electrical repairs.
· Demonstrates a strong work ethic and self-motivation.
· Able to work effectively independently as well as part of a team.
Qualifications and Experience
· Electrical Ticket and/or a Red Seal Mechanic certification
· ASTT Certification
· EGSA Certification (Electrical Generating Systems Association) preferred
· A diploma from a relevant technical institute
· Valid Class 5 Driver's License
· A minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience as a Power Generation Technician
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $45.00-$55.00 per hour
