The Behavior Specialist works as a member of the inter-disciplinary resource team to provide services responsive to the identified needs of children and families. The inter-disciplinary team includes teachers, speech-language pathologists, early childhood educators, speech-language assistants, occupational therapists, therapy assistants, and a behavior specialist. The interdisciplinary resource team has the capacity to adapt to changes in the needs of families accessing our program.


  • Consult and collaboratively work with site team (which includes a Teacher, Early Childhood Educator(s), Therapy Assistants, a Social Worker and other staff in program planning
  • Create, model and coach site team regarding intervention strategies for the classroom
  • Provide site team with specific information on children’s behavioral goals and areas of skill development
  • Assist site team and parents in interpretation of behavioral reports and assessments * Work in consultation with site Supervisor
  • Complete observations, documentation, formal and informal interviews in the classroom and home environment
  • Conducts research to develop, modify, and enhance strategies
  • Manage caseload of 5-8 children within 4 half-day classes; ensuring time is allocated to all classrooms based on the needs of children and teams
  • Facilitate and/or participate in bi/weekly case consult meetings with, but not exclusive to, teacher, early childhood educator, and supervisor
  • Assist teacher in creating and monitoring strong and measurable behavioral goals for IPP
  • Partner with core classroom team to model appropriate, positive behavioral strategies with the student

The successful candidate must possess:

  • Degree/Diploma in Child and Youth Work, Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies, or related area
  • Knowledge of proven effective intervention strategies
  • CPR/First Aid
  • Knowledge of the impact preschool mental health and diagnoses and speech/language delays and disorders have on children
  • Knowledge of records management principles including Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Legislation
  • Knowledge of safe work environments including Occupational Health and Safety regulations and legislation
  • Experience in working with multi disciplinary teams
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills and the ability to relay complex information to non-technical contacts
  • Skills to work positively, collaboratively with children, classroom staff, social worker, parents, and other allied professionals
  • Very strong assessment and problem-solving skills are required to identify and address behavioral needs * Ability to work as a team and independently
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer systems Windows and Excel

The ideal candidate is adept at working in a highly interactive learning environment focused on the learning needs of pre-school children, and will also have:

  • Experience working with pre-school children and their families
  • Experience providing classroom-based services
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary team environment

Work Locations: Behavior Specialist is assigned to one or two locations based on need, South East, North East/Central, or West area
