Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.
The Senior Financial Analyst provides financially-informed analytical support to the Commercial Management Team (Operations); understands the financial and accounting impact of business processes (e.g. audit, legal, and reporting requirements) to evaluate current and future business activities, and deliver timely and accurate accounting and operational excellence.
Provides finance forecasting and reports (e.g. variance and cost-recovery analysis, reconciliation of accounts), prepares entries, and takes corrective action
Conducts financial analyses in support of the business operations of the commercial management team, using proper accounting treatment; provides subject matter expertise in analyzing and responding to inquiries, and solving complex problems
Creates and applies reporting templates, financial models and automated processes to meet legal and corporate standards, including meeting deadlines
Assesses the implications of new processes, systems and projects from an accounting perspective, (e.g. detecting defects, limitations, cost-benefit implications, and risks prior to implementation)
Performs financial data mining, establishes complete process maps and creates master databases, including advanced statistical/relational analysis of large data sets to identify and correct inconsistencies and anomalies in Oracle E Business Suite and other IT solutions
Provides insights and recommendations to the Commercial Management team and business unit leaders to drive master data-related decisions
Supports the development of commercial evidence, tools, techniques and guidance that will demonstrate value for money for Metrolinx projects
Handles validation of costs, evaluation of works performed and assists with payments of key operations vendors
Provides internal stakeholders, leaders and commercial team members, with agreed upon financial reports and recommendations with accuracy and on deadline
Provides subject matter expertise to support other financial professionals and activities (i.e. accountants, auditors, budget managers)
Provides subject matter expertise to non-finance business leaders, partners and committee members, assists in interpretation of financial data for commercial decision-making and provides commentary
Supports internal and external stakeholders and provides analyses, reports, and financial tools
Works closely with internal and external auditors and other consultants, to maintain financial integrity of the business and increase understanding of financial applications, controls, and standards
Develops commentary and presentations on financial analysis and reports for senior management and presents them to aid commercial decision-making
Monitors and maps commercial management processes, with particular attention to control and reporting functions; recommends immediate and longer-term changes to ensure the integrity of data and financial information
Tests new functionality from an accounting/financial control perspective and provides impact assessments
Recommends process and control improvements (e.g. automating technology or accounting practices) and provides clear standards of practice, protocols, and direction for internal and external partners
Conducts or takes part in financial investigations to meet or exceed audit and legal requirements
Exercises due diligence in fiscal management and reporting, to reduce financial, legal, and reputational risks
Provides recommendations to protect Metrolinx’s financial integrity; shows stewardship of resources with innovative options and attention to value for money and cost savings
Advises other employees on topics related to the incumbent’s area of expertise, but does not guide employees in their day-to day activities
Guides and mentors other financial professionals on the team; establishing policies and procedures for analysis and reporting, and reviewing their work

Completion of a degree in Accounting, Finance, Math, Commerce, or related field – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent
Minimum six (6) years’ progressive experience as a financial analyst
Experience with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Knowledge of business practices, financial analysis and reporting; understands the financial and accounting impact of business processes to evaluate current and future business activities (e.g. audit, legal, and reporting requirements)
Ability to perform advanced level analysis, interpret and evaluate financial data, and recommend solutions to non-recurring problems
Methodical, hands-on, resourceful, and detail-oriented approach to problem solving and analytical research
MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Oracle Database experience (CM14, Oracle E Business Suite, Salesforce, etc.)
Interpersonal and oral/written/presentation communication skills to develop and present commentary, reports, and presentations on financial analysis to senior management, to aid decision-making
