The Advanced Care Paramedics are responsible for the provision of advanced life support (ALS) patient care in the pre-hospital and in-clinic settings. He/she must work in cooperation with allied emergency and health care personnel to provide the highest possible level of proficiency in the preservation of life and health. This position reports directly to the EMS Manager for the responsibilities listed.
Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities:
- Deliver ALS level of care in a rapid, decisive and effective manner within challenging environmental and patient care conditions; including, but not limited to, long hours with minimal sleep, strenuous physical and emotional demands, both in and out of doors, any time of the day, during any season.
- Fulfill all aspects of their job description independent of direct supervision.
- Adhere to the Nakoda EMS policies and procedures.
- Fulfill the physical and emotional requirements of this position; key aspects of which are strength, agility, and emotional stability. Develop a high standard of interpersonal and communications skills.
- Foster cohesiveness, understanding and trust in a small team environment, independent of individual personalities.
- Maintain a high level of commitment to the provision of pre-hospital care, exemplified by meeting the requirements of a rotating work schedule and the needs of a highly inter-dependent team.
- If full time, will maintain a separate portfolio that aids in the overall running of the service. The portfolio will be determined by the EMS Manager.
- Ensure the ambulance, including equipment and supplies, are checked and ready for response at all times.
- Provides rescue, extrication and transport of patients while providing the highest possible level of pre-hospital patient care.
- Participate in the public relations and public education seminars and activities. Administrative functions.
- Participate in department education and skill development programs.
- Perform general cleaning and maintenance of the emergency service area of the Public Safety Building.
Performance Standards
- Equipment, vehicle inventory and stock inventory check each shift.
- Daily, weekly and/or monthly cleaning of unit as scheduled.
- Repairs, or ensures that repairs or replacement is done to all malfunctioning equipment or ambulance vehicles.
- Daily vehicle operational checks including electrical, fluid and medical gas levels.
- Provides advanced life support and directs PCP’s in provision of basic life support care.
- Provides ALS care and extra skills as certification and Medical Direction permits. Complete all patient care reports and records as required prior to going off duty.
- Drives and/or directs the driving of ambulance vehicles in a safe and controlled manner, and minimizes the risk to the public, the patient and care providers.
- Lectures and demonstrates patient care at public relation and public education functions as assigned.
- Undertakes responsibility for managing a portfolio, e.g., inventory control, vehicle maintenance, scheduling and public relations/education if requested.
- Attends educational in-services. Coordinates and/or instructs in-service sessions as required.
- Trains and advises volunteers, students and observers in use of equipment and patient care, as outlined in the treatment protocols and orientation manuals.
- Performs cleaning duties as outlined in Emergency Services Policy and Procedure manual.
Education, Skills & Qualifications:
- Graduate of a provincially approved Advanced Care Paramedic training program. Must be registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics as an ACP.
- Must have and maintain a minimum class four driver’s license with fewer than six demerit points.
- 2-3 years of experience working with First Nation’s communities an asset Previous experience in adult education and instructor certification in CPR, ACLS, PALS, BTLS and a pre-hospital preceptor course is desirable
- Must maintain a high level of commitment to understanding and meeting the needs of the community and ensure that Emergency Medical Service is delivered in a culturally considerate manner.

Pay: $37.58-$49.49 per hour
