Caregiver Opportunity – Toronto, Ontario (Central) Schedule: 2 nights/week, 10:00 PM – 4:00 AM (6 hours/visit) - flexible on which nights Location: Toronto, ON (Central Toronto, Davenport Road area)
- ️ Important Note — Cognitive Decline & Language Considerations: This placement requires a caregiver who is patient, genuinely engaging, and ideally fluent in Gujarati. The client has dementia and has reverted to his first language. A caregiver who can communicate in that language, or is at minimum warm and comfortable working with clients who have limited verbal communication, is strongly preferred.
About the Client: This role supports an elderly male client living with his wife in the finished basement unit of their family home in central Toronto. Their adult children live nearby and visit regularly, but the primary day-to-day caregiver is his wife, who is managing on her own and needs meaningful breaks. The family is seeking private care during 2 nights per week to provide relief for family caregivers who are currently managing nights.
The client has dementia and has been in noticeable decline over the past four to five months. He is no longer able to walk or position himself independently. He is non-verbal or minimally verbal in English and has reverted to his native language. He can still understand English at a basic level, but responds better in his first language. His wife manages meals and most of his care, so cooking is not required. The caregiver's presence allows her to have a good nights sleep. Standby and assist client when he awakens, approximately 2-4 times during the night. Mobility support is needed - help him get to the washroom if needed at night. The family lives in a finished basement suite on the main floor of the home. The setup is self-contained and comfortable.
Responsibilities:
Companionship and social engagement — spending genuine, present time with the client; conversation in his native language if possible, or simply a calm and attentive presence Light mobility support — assisting with gentle movement around the living space, basic range-of-motion or leg exercises as tolerated Supervision and safety — monitoring the client's wellbeing during the visit and responding to any needs that arise Caregiver relief — being present so the client's wife can take a break and have uninterrupted time to herself General wellness observation — noting any changes in mood, cognition, or physical condition and communicating with the family
What We're Looking For:
PSW certification or equivalent experience in personal support or companion care Experience working with clients with dementia or cognitive decline — this is essential Fluency in Gujarati (or the client's confirmed native language) strongly preferred — the family will provide the language name; this is a meaningful asset for this placement Patient, warm, and comfortable with clients who have limited verbal communication Physically capable of providing light mobility support and basic movement assistance Reliable and consistent — familiarity and routine are especially important for clients with dementia Located in or able to travel to central Toronto (Davenport Road area)
Schedule: Starting schedule: 2 nights trial, 10:00 PM – 4:00 AM, with opportunity for ongoing weekly schedule. The family wants to start gradually and assess fit before expanding hours. Schedule may grow over time depending on how the placement goes.
