We are seeking a motivated Apprentice Electrician interested in building a career in traffic signals and street lighting. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands on experience while working alongside skilled journeypersons in a specialized and essential trade.
The successful candidate will assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal systems, pedestrian crossovers, street lighting, flashing beacons, and other traffic related electrical equipment.
This role requires a strong interest in the electrical trade, a willingness to learn, and a positive, team-first attitude. Hands on field training will be provided.

What you will do Everyday
- Install, maintain, inspect, and repair traffic signals, school flashers, street lights, and associated systems.
- Work on underground conduits, signal poles, controller cabinets, wiring, and detection loops.
- Test and troubleshoot electrical, electronic, and communications issues in traffic signal equipment.
- Diagnose malfunctions such as timing issues, detection failures, or damaged circuitry.
- Program signal controllers, set timing and phasing, and implement updates as directed by traffic engineers.
- Operate and maintain ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) equipment, including detection systems, video/radar detection, dynamic message signs, fiber-optic networks, and other connected infrastructure.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, inspections, and maintain detailed maintenance logs.
- Manage inventory of traffic signal equipment and order replacement parts as needed.
- Read and interpret engineering plans, electrical drawings, schematics, and signal designs.
- Apply electrical codes and design standards relevant to traffic signal systems.
Skills Required

- Knowledge of machinery, tools, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic cabinets and roadway lighting.
- Ability to perform physical labor as part of daily job duties.
- Comfortable working in inclement weather conditions.
- Flexibility to work days, nights, weekends, or travel out of town as required.
- Proficient in computer applications relevant to the role.
Qualifications Needed
- Valid Apprentice or Journeyman Electrician Certification.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license and a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with fewer than 6 demerits.
- International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA CPS) Signal certifications are an asset.
