Job Title: Akwe Program Coordinator
Hours: 32 Hours per week
Location: 2929 Howard Ave., Windsor, ON N8X 4W4
Job Purpose:
The Akwe program is grounded in cultural traditions providing a sense of belonging for urban Indigenous children ages 7 – 12. It offers one-to-one activities, group activities, and family circles to encourage positive behaviors and well-being. The program supports individualized goals in areas such as social skill development, educational intervention, violence prevention, children in care or at risk of being in care, 2SLGBTQ+ supports, and positive nutrition and physical activity. An additional component is the Student Nutrition Program (SNP), which provides healthy meals and snacks to support children's concentration and success.
Education Requirements:
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Child and Youth Work, Indigenous Studies, or related field
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience
Experience and Job Requirements:
- Experience working with Indigenous communities
- Strong knowledge of Indigenous culture, family violence, child welfare, trauma impacts, residential school issues, youth engagement, and community outreach
- Familiarity with Indigenous and mainstream service resources in the community
- Experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation
- Case management experience, including case conferencing and compiling statistics
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Flexibility to work extended hours or weekends
- Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to an insured vehicle
Responsibilities:
- Provide culturally appropriate programming to engage at-risk youth
- Refer participants to appropriate services and liaise with Indigenous and mainstream resources
- Participate in case conferences and plans of care from Children’s Aid Society (CAS)
- Collaborate with organizations, businesses, and institutions to create opportunities for youth
- Develop and support transition plans for direct-service users exiting the program
- Provide healthy meals and snacks following SNP guidelines
- Maintain confidential client records and database
- Provide one-on-one peer support
- Participate in program initiatives and reporting requirements
- Perform other duties, such as newsletter submissions, event coordination, and attending staff meetings
Salary: Negotiable based on qualifications
